  3. The Election of 1960 • Republicans nominated VP Richard M. Nixon of California • Democrats nominated Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, who selected Lyndon B. Johnson from Texas as his running mate

  4. Issues: loss of national prestige, youth versus experiences, inflation, and a “missile gap” between the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. • JFK was Catholic, which cost him some votes • Nixon originally led in the polls, but Nixon exhausted his resources by campaigning in all 50 states and…
