  1. Manifestation of the Cold War In:The 1980 Olympics By: Kev and Al

  2. Inflation1970’s • Inflation-general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money. • Inflation was a problem during this time period before and in the 1980s. Also the US was still suffering at the hands of the Great Depression. • The US dollar along with American morale was also very low during this time at an all time low and unemployment its self took a turn for the worst.

  3. President Lyndon B. Johnson's decision to finance a major war and the Great Society at the same time, without a significant increase in taxation, launched a runaway double-digit inflation and mounting federal debt that ravaged the American economy. • This is known as the Capitalism Crisis

  5. Vietnam • Also during this time the US were at the hands of a nasty war which was fought in Vietnam. 58,148 were killed in Vietnamand overall it put the nation as a whole in a deep state of grief and an unwillingness to go on. It was also a source of conflict.

  6. Soviets had just invaded Afghanistan, prolonging the Cold War. As the Olympics opened, 52 Americans were held hostage in Iran. • With all of this in occurrence, our nation, subsequently felt helpless.

  7. Nationalism • Prior to this time period the U.S liked to think of their country as invincible and had an adequate deal of Nationalism, the loss in Vietnam damaged citizens pride and self-confidence.

  12. Results • The United States Olympic Hockey teamed stunned not only the Soviet team but the world as they went on to Beat them with a score of 4-3. this was the biggest upset in sports history.

  13. A Surge of Nationalism • US hockey team against the country's enemy the Soviet Union.
