  2. Users of Qualitative Research – • Anthropology • Sociology • History • Business • Education • Counseling • Psychology • Nursing

  3. Quantitative vs. Qualitative

  4. An old joke told in research coursesThe Quantitative Version A renowned heart surgeon described his new methods to a rapt audience at a medical convention. From the back of the room, someone asked, “Did you randomly assign half your patients to the old treatment and half to the new one to test it?” From the rostrum, in an arrogant huff, the surgeon replied, “Of course not. Why would I sentence half my patients to premature death by depriving them of better treatment?” From the back of the room, “But how did your know which half was getting the better treatment?”

  5. The Qualitative version A renowned heart surgeon described his new methods to a rapt audience at a medical convention. He presented detailed results of 20 in-depth cases, all of them long-term successes. From the back of the room, someone asked:, “Did you randomly assign half your patients to the old treatment and half to the new one to test it?” From the rostrum with a caring, compassionate tone, the surgeon replied:, “I tried to. I sent out invitations worldwide to statisticians asking for volunteers willing to be part of a control group and forgo my new treatment if they got heart disease. None volunteered.”

  6. Quantitative research sets hypotheses tests HypothesesUses large samples Measures numeric Variables analysis using statistics

  7. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH STARTS WITH PROBLEMS USES RICH NATURAL DATA WITH SMALL SAMPLE SIZES DEVELOPS THEORY

  8. "Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts." –Albert Einstein

  9. Qualitative v. Quantitative Focus on meaning Goals: understanding, discovery, theory generation Design is flexible, evolving Samples can be of any size and can be nonrandom Instruments are interviews, observations and documents Inductive Focus on how much or many Goals: control, theory confirmation Design is predetermined Sample must be large and random Instruments are scales, questionnaires, tests Deductive

  10. Characteristics of qualitative research • Inquiry • Induction • “Rich, thick, description” • Giving voice to others
