  1. Discovering the Heart of God Part 21 Joy

  2. Joy The church should be filled with joy, but strangely many Christians reflect a view of discouragement and apathy. We should ask ourselves why? What is our focus? What are our expectations? What is our view of God?

  3. Joy of Bethlehem This Sunday we celebrate the lighting of the Shepherd’s Candle. When the shepherds encountered the angels they were filled with fear, but when they encountered the Christ Child, they were filled with joy!

  4. Joy of Bethlehem Luke 2:10-11Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Fear destroys joy! The world is looking for joy, but in all the wrong places. Many believe that things, power, and popularity will bring joy. Rather these bring fear, because one cannot truly possess these.

  5. Joy of Bethlehem Luke 2:10-11Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. God is the source of joy. We can possess a relationship with God and can find lasting joy in knowing Him. Our joy is based in who God is and what He is doing.

  6. Joy of Bethlehem Luke 2:10-11Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. The angels told the shepherds a message of great joy. Messiah had come and was born in Bethlehem. There should be joy when God’s plans and purposes fulfilled.

  7. God of Joy 1 Timothy 1:9-11Knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. The term “blessed” here is the same as in the Beatitudes!

  8. God of Joy 1 Timothy 1:11According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. Think about this. Paul has just written about the profane and wicked people who are under the law. They are miserable and unsatisfied by what the world has given them. This philosophy stands in sharp contrast to the gospel of the “happy and joyful” God. Our God is a God of Joy!

  9. God of Joy Romans 15:13Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Not only is God full of joy, but He wants us to share that same joy in our lives. God’s joy comes from a deep condition of the heart that finds true satisfaction and contentment in the things of God. True joy comes from a right relationship with God and not circumstances. Paul and Silas could rejoice in prison even when they had been beaten.

  10. God of Joy Nehemiah 8:10b…Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Many interpret the joy referred to here as the joy which God gives, and so it is. However, it is much more! It is also the joy which God possesses and experiences. God gives us joy because He is joyful. He is the source of joy, just as He is the source of love, of truth, of mercy, and so on. Joy is both a description of God and a description of what He gives.

  11. Joy in Creation After each day of creation, God looked at what had been done and declared it good. This was more than a pronouncement of perfection, but declared a deep satisfaction in what had been accomplished. When man sinned and evil filled His creation, God “grieved” that he made man (Genesis 6:5-7). God knew that this would happen, so it is not speaking of regret. Rather this verse shows how God’s joy turned to sorrow over the deeds of man.

  12. Joy in Messiah Psalm 45:6-7Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions. The word translated “gladness” can also be translated “joy”. God the Father has anointed the Son with joy!

  13. Joy in Messiah John 15:11“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. Jesus is willing to share this same joy with those who put their faith and trust in Him. Notice that Jesus does not just give us “joy” but that we would be saturated with His joy. Jesus had taught His disciple many things. Joy comes from seeing life from Jesus’ perspective rather than our own.

  14. Joy in Messiah Hebrews 12:2Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Jesus endured the cross by looking to the joy that He would experience. That joy is linked to Him being the author and finisher of our faith. He knew you from before the foundation of the world, and He endured the cross looking to the joy of us spending eternity in His presence.

  15. Joy in Messiah Luke 15:7I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Jesus shared a parable of the lost lamb. He concludes that there is more joy over the one sinner who repents than over the 99 who do not. There is a sharp contrast between the joy of heaven and that of sin. God’s joy rejoices in transformed lives.

  16. Joy of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Joy is listed as one of the fruits of the Spirit. God is characterized as being joyful. His Spirit is placed in us to transform our character to be like His. God wants us to be joyful people.

  17. Rejoice Philippians 4:4Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! There is much to rejoice in. Take a moment to think of all that God has done for you. He has saved you, adopted you, transformed you, sustained you, gifted you, and is preparing a place for you. Set your sights on what God is doing and you will find much to joy and rejoice in. We are to be a joyful people making joyful noises unto our God!
