  1. Discovering the Heart of God Part 24 Wrath

  2. Introduction This morning we are going to talk about the “wrath” of God. This makes many people uncomfortable. We find comfort in verses of God’s love, but want to make excuses with regard to God’s wrath. Many have tried to explain God in the Old Testament as the “God of Wrath” and in the New Testament He is the “God of Love”. This does not work as we see both testaments talk of both His love and wrath. This morning we want to put God’s wrath into a proper context.

  3. Wrath Romans 1:18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Wrath means, “anger and/or temper”. It speaks of the agitation of the soul with regard to a situation. It is also used of the anger exhibited in punishment, and can be applied to the punishment itself. It is also used of the punishments inflicted by judges.

  4. Wrath Romans 1:18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. When we consider God’s wrath, it is not to be taken lightly. In our verse, it states that God’s wrath is made known against ALL ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth.

  5. Wrath Romans 12:19-21Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. This passage states that it is not our place to exercise vengeance. We are to do good! We all get angry when people hurt the innocent or those we love. We know that there has to be real consequences for such behavior. Our problem is we want to set the standards for wrong doing, and we want to justify our own wrong behavior.

  6. Since God is going to take up your cause and see to it that justice is done, you can lay it down. You don’t have to carry anger and bitterness and resentment and revenge. Indeed you dare not. Jesus warned that an unforgiving heart will destroy you in the end.

  7. Wrath Romans 12:19Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Verse 19 tells us not to avenge ourselves but to leave it to God’s wrath. The wrath of God is defined further as God’s vengeance. So wrath is connected with God’s response to something that deserves vengeance. And then it says, “I will repay.” So God’s wrath is treated as a repayment to man for something man has done. We can refine our definition of the wrath of God like this: the wrath of God is God’s settled anger toward sin expressed in the repayment of suitable vengeance on the guilty sinner.

  8. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It is Eternal 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.

  9. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Terrible Matthew 13:41-42The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

  10. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Deserved – It will be just & right Romans 2:5But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.

  11. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Deserved – It will be just & right If you think that your sins do not deserve wrath, ponder these four things: It was one sin alone that brought the entire world under the judgment of God, and brought death upon all people. And you have not committed one sin, but tens of thousands of sins. Romans 5:12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.

  12. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Deserved – It will be just & right If you think that your sins do not deserve wrath, ponder these four things: 2. Consider James 2:10, “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” Not only have you sinned tens of thousands of times, but each one had in it the breaking of the entire law of God.

  13. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Deserved – It will be just & right If you think that your sins do not deserve wrath, ponder these four things: 3. Consider Galatians 3:10, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.’” The wrath of God’s curse falls on us for not obeying all that is commanded. One failure and the curse falls.

  14. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Deserved – It will be just & right If you think that your sins do not deserve wrath, ponder these four things: 4. Consider that any offense and any dishonor to an infinitely honorable and infinitely worthy God, is an infinite offense and an infinite dishonor. Therefore, an infinite punishment is deserved.

  15. 4 Characteristics of God’s Final Wrath It will be Inescapable at the end of the age This means, if one does not know Jesus as their Personal Savior, they should do so at once. 2 Corinthians 6:2For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

  16. Motivation • Why does God hate sin so much? • All sin is against God. It attacks and corrupts His creation. We hate cancer as it destroys the body, in the same way God hates sin for it corrupts His creation • Sin is against mankind. God wants the best for man. Sin turns man away from and against God, and results in death. • Sin is personal. It is the antithesis of God’s holiness. God is not mocked and “fear of God is the beginning of wisdom”.
