  6. WHAT WILL WE DO THIS YEAR? • Study cell structure and function • Identify/describe the Kingdoms of life • Dissect ~ study anatomy of organisms for comparative anatomy • Study ecology and environmental issues • Learn about important scientists and lab equipment and perform labs in class • Prepare for the PSSA next year for science and meet as many of the state standards as possible

  7. WIKISPACE FOR MS. SHIMEL • http://msshimel.wikispaces.com/ • Pictures of some things we will see and do in this class this school year…

  8. WHERE DOES YOUR GRADE COME FROM? • Grades are based on POINTS • Bell-Ringer question each day is worth 5 points = 1 for date, 1 for question, 3 for response • Homework (usually 5 points per assignment) • Absence Journal (15 points) • Participation (in labs, discussions, Do Nows) • Labs (can be up to 100 points) • Quizzes (usually only 50 points or fewer) • Tests (mostly 100 points~based on percentage)

  9. RULES • Follow the rules outlined in the student handbook • Respect yourself, respect others, and respect all property! • Be ready with all materials in your assigned seat when the bell rings. • Speak at appropriate times, use appropriate language, and appropriate voice levels. • You must do what the class is doing.

  10. CONSEQUENCES • 1st offense: Warning! ~ talk to student about problem behavior/issue at hand • 2nd offense: Confer with student ~ Detention may be assigned ~ Parent Contact • 3rd offense: Detention assigned ~ Parent contact ~ Contract created if necessary • 4th offense: In-School Suspension ~ Referral to Principal • *Extreme Clause = If necessary, immediately removed from room and referral to principal

  11. UNDERSTAND??? • Almost anything will happen one time. Hopefully we can work together to help you make better decisions in the classroom. In most cases, you will receive a warning 1st. • If you choose to break a rule a second time and have had a warning in the past, a detention will be assigned and parent contact will be made. • If the same incident occurs a 3rd time, a detention will again be assigned and it might be beneficial to start a behavior contract to prevent the same behavior from occurring in the future and to help you to make better choices. • On the 4th occurrence, there is a definite problem that needs to be corrected so an in-school suspension will be assigned. The principal will be notified to help remediate the situation.

  12. WARNINGS • Warnings will be written: • Correct your behavior • Get back on task • See me after class • We will have a chance to discuss issue at hand • I have documentation on record of infraction • We do not further disrupt the class at the time of the incident saving time and/or embarrassment

  13. WRITTEN WARNING • Read it • Sign it • Keep it until the end of class when we meet/discuss…

  14. FOLLOWING RULES AND PROCEDURES WILL RESULT IN… • Verbal acknowledgement • A stress-free learning environment • A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere

  15. PROCEDURES • I have many procedures we will discuss and practice = EXPLAIN, REHEARSE, REINFORCE will be the pattern… • I have many goals that we will work toward • I will be fair and consistent • I am a content area expert, have a plan for each class, will follow the curriculum outline • We will work and learn and do ~ together!

  23. ABSENCE JOURNAL • You will each take a turn preparing the absence journal and will receive 15 points if it is completed correctly • Inside the absence journal will be a “direction” sheet telling you what to do.

  24. SCHEDULED CHECKOUT • Please let me know as you enter the classroom that you have an early dismissal. • Quietly raise your hand to get my attention • Pack up your materials and leave at your scheduled time after you SIGN OUT (under TV on VCR) • **For emergencies, quickly get my attention and I will assist you**

  25. TURNING IN PAPERS • Sit in assigned seat and check for proper heading before moving paper across row • Place your paper on the desk to your left • The person at the next desk will put his/her paper on top of the stack and will pass the stack to his/her left. • The 4th desk’s papers will be collected by me or someone else and placed into the “turn in box” by the microscope cabinet.

  26. CLASS DISCUSSION • Please participate! • I want to hear what you have to say • Make all questions and comments RELEVANT to the current discussion • If your question is OFF TOPIC, please WRITE it down, ask later, or hand it in later • Refrain from interrupting for pencil sharpening or lav usage ~ Follow those procedures

  29. LEAVING THE ROOM • To use the lav or locker, completely fill out your own card and approach me silently to present the card for a signature to leave the room. • If you do not have your card, you may use the restricted card ONCE during the marking period. • Try to present your completed card at an appropriate time during class • SIGN OUT/IN (under the TV on the VCR)

  30. LEAVING THE ROOM… • Passes to Nurse • To visit the nurse, a true need must be expressed. Therefore, expect me to question you about the validity of your request prior to writing a pass. Follow up with the nurse will also take place. • Use of the telephone • I will not excuse missing instructional time for you to visit the office to make a telephone call.

  31. CLASS DISMISSAL • The teacher dismisses you, NOT the bell • Do not start packing up prior to the bell ~ wait for teacher dismissal • Please take your materials with you • Remember that I cannot be responsible for items left behind in the classroom with so many other students who may interact with those left-behind materials…

  32. GETTING YOUR ATTENTION I will . . . • Stand in front of the class. • Raise my hand. • Wait for everyone to be quiet. • Begin speaking. • May say “Give Me Five”
