  2. What is a hurricane? • The hurricane is the largest and most powerful storm in the whole world. • Hurricanes are actually a swirling mass of clouds that spin around a calm clear center called the “eye” of the storm.

  3. This is an example of a hurricane traveling up the east coast and hitting Florida on its long journey up north.

  4. How do hurricanes form? • First, a thunderstorm forms near the equator. • Next, the winds reaches up to 63 mph (miles per hour). It is then classified as a tropical storm. • Then, after the winds reach 74 mph or more the clouds begin to spiral tightly around the eye of the hurricane, and it is then officially classified as a hurricane. • After that, a circle of spinning clouds, rain, and wind move forward. • Finally, the hurricane reaches the landfall, and can weaken or increase strength at any time.

  5. Destruction • With dangerous and damaging winds and rain, hurricanes can cause major damage and devastating destruction. • They can destroy homes and cause major flooding. • Residents are advised to seek shelter or evacuate the area for the sake of their lives during the dangerous storms. • As residents return back to their homes sometime the destruction scars them emotionally.

  6. Interesting Facts about Hurricanes • The eye of a hurricane is clear and calm, this usually indicated that the storm is half way over. • Strong winds like these are called hurricanes when formed in the Atlantic Ocean, but when formed in the North and South Pacific they are classified as typhoons. • All hurricanes and typhoons form over oceans. • Most hurricanes travel North at about 30 mph. • Hurricanes spin because of the orbit of the earth.

  7. When faced with extreme weather you should… • Listen for weather updates and/or watches or warnings • Evacuate the area, if necessary for the strength of the storm • Stay inside and advise others to do the same • Try to find most enclosed part of your home (with no mirrors or windows) and hide there during the storm • Keep a stash of food with you and keep special and memorable items with you just incase. That may be all you have after the storm passes. You NEVER know.

  8. We hope our presentation on the formation and devastations of hurricanes has informed you on how to make smart decisions when you are faced with natural disasters. Thanks for watching! :D
