Female/Male Space What are the norms in each culture Egy: more personal space b/w different genders Ex: no Public Display of Affection b/w couples US: generally, less personal space b/w different genders. *A female/female friendship personal space in Egy would be similar to a female/male friendship personal space in the US -Exceptions: in more conservative communities in the U.S ( based on religion/ region?) there would be larger female/male personal space

Emotional Space • tangible sense of space affects the non tangible sense of space • Example: sharing a room means sharing small decisions such as what to wear • – Egy Student in US personal room – cognitive processes and feeling lonely - US student and being bombarded with so much personal interaction – emotional exhaustion

  11. Non-Tangible/emotional Space cont’d • Teen cultures (expectations regarding need for personal space) • Egy: parents access to students personal items is ok • US: parental access to students personal items is generally not ok – frustrating for the student ( regarded as invasion of privacy)

Non-Tangible/emotional Space cont’dWhy these differences ? • Intercultural analysis for the “ I need my space” - because eventually the teen moves out in few year ( see… individualism vs. collectivism cultures, Values, and family life &/or relationships sections) • Intercultural analysis for the “ get out of my sight” ( because Egy is a collective society and being away from the conformity of the family and their opinion sharing in every situation is a punishment)

Non-Tangible/emotional Space cont’d • How concept of space is used differently conflict resolution? • In case of sarent-student conflict • US: accepted that when a student is approached by a parent to solve a problem, the student can say “ not now” &/or “ I need my space” • Egy: the student usualy is expected take the initiative in solving a parent-student conflict. if the parent does so, it is perceived as rude and ungrateful for the student to refuse the parent by saying “ I need my space” etc… ( see parent-student relationship and hierarchy …)

Keep in mind the emotional void the student may be feeling because of the wide spaces at home ; sharing small decisions at the beginning may be something that the student will ask you to do with him/her ( maybe a way to make the student feel warmer?) - . . . ? Advice for US families hosting American Students

Advice for the Egy Families hosting US students - Since the student is more used to personal privacy, the family should explain to the student why they may go through their personal belonging, or why their personal belonging moves around ( house keepers tidying bedroom?) - When the US student is alone in his/ her room, it may not mean that something is wrong… - Talk to the student about how that makes you feel, and give her/him time to adapt to being always part of the group …
