  3. Analysis of the brief I have been asked to re-design the outside entertaining area of the backyard. The are a family of 5 with a large dog called; the whole family have busy lifestyles and rarely have time to work on things that they want to do. They regularly entertain, but they find this area of the backyard an embarrassment because it isn’t as nice as they would like it to be. They would like a bigger table from what they have at the moment, new flooring (the floor is currently concrete and unattractive), they would like a stylish floor which symbolizes who they are and how their house is, they would like a new garage back door changed into a roller door. I asked my clients if they would like a small kitchen area added so it would be quick and easy to accommodate any cutlery that they needed spontaneously instead of having to go inside and abandoning the guests, they approved to this and I was thinking that I could add two cupboards and two draws, a sink and a bar fridge. I have created a specific design that can be user friendly, inexpensive and stylish to accommodate the new area of the outdoor entertaining area.

If so what is it? ___________________________________ Do you like the current trends or styles? If yes what are they? ___________________________________________________________ Is there anything in particular that you need changing? _________________________________________________________________________ Is there a particular reason you want this room to be redone? ______________________________________________________________________________ Client Survey

  5. Client Profile Client profile: the father is a business owner, who mows the lawn every 2-3 weeks and helps out with the larger chores in the garden. the mother who goes to TAFE and works 3 days a week on top of going to TAFE. 3 kids: - 20 yr old apprentice - 19yr old student - 16yr old student Location: Sydney north; about a kilometer off the train line and high way, small neighbourhood with lots of trees. Their house is on the downfall of a hill, bright sun in the morning and no sun from about 3- 3:30 in the afternoon Space that is being re-designed: Outside entertaining area, Barbeque area, at the right hand side of the house, behind garage, it is used to cook BBQ’s and for casual entertainment. This area is bring re-designed to have the same look as their house, the need it to be done up and to put some back liveliness to it. Budget: My clients have been looking into re-doing this area for some years and have an appreciation of the cost involved; therefore they believe a budget of $3500 is adequate. However there is some flexibility with the budget. My clients needs and wants: Theme wanted: Modern, Asian, Indonesian/Balinese; this theme is carried out throughout the house and they would like it to be incorporated outside. Particular things that need to be changed: The two big blue doors into a roller door, needs to be changed into a more functional space, which will be used more often then what it is now, a movable food preparation and serving island. The creation of an undercover area and the floor needs to be upgraded and changed. Main features into new area: Barbeque and table and chairs and the plants would be best to have as the main feature there also needs to be a table and chairs. My clients don’t require a water feature as they have a swimming pool. The main purpose to this area is: To relax to entertain guests and do have a sit down meal and being able to comfortably fit 8 to10 people around the table. Colour interest for the space Green and neutral earthy colours, the greens could be introduced with the garden and the earthy colours could be introduced with the feature wall and bar colours. These points have been taken from the survey the two household owners did, I have collated the information and these are the main factors I have bought up. I believe I need to do what I have been asked to do by my clients rather then what would look best, it’s their house and they need to put up with it after all.

  7. Analysis of Colour, Trend and Concept Boards My clients have different views over the colour use and design. One client would prefer greens and natural colours whilst the other client would prefer light beige and light browns. I have tried to incorporate both of these preferences into my colour, trend and concept boards. My final design includes natural woods and green foliage with off white side wall and garage with white roller-door. After having a meeting with one of my clients, he was able to tell me which of the three trend and three colour boards he preferred. My client preferred the 3rd colour board (this is the colour board with Lopez W and Big Wig AL) he would like these colours incorporated into the design. I asked which of the trend boards he preferred and whether he would like them to be incorporated into the new design of my space. He preferred the ‘White’ colour board and he would like them to be incorporated into the design. I have tried as much as possible to incorporate all of my clients needs, wants, colour and trend preferences into my initial design.

  8. Design Specifications Function: the function of a design is its duty or activity, its plays a specific role in the design. The final function of my space is to be a comfortable entertaining area that is able to fir 6-8 guests this area must be covered from the elements. The end design must fit the needs and wants of my clients. Materials: The materials I have to use need to stay within my budget and need to with stand the elements of the weather. Having to incorporate these issues into my design will allow me to have a better understanding of research about the materials. Therefore I will have an increased knowledge when coming to finding the correct materials. Shape & Size: I have to include the bodily dimensions for movement and maneuvering between places. I have to create a space which will allow people who are 6ft 5inches walk under a roof or over head without hitting their heads. I also need to create a walkway down the side of the yard which is 1.5m wide so people won’t get stuck whilst walking down. By creating an area using these dimensions we will be able to work with people in the community who need special measurements for an entertaining area. Safety: My project must be safe and must have safe working environments; people must be able to walk around safely, be able to sit at the table with a safe distance from the BBQ. I must place all my objects at a good distance apart from each other. By creating a safe environment users will like to come back to the area for another run. Cost: I must stay within reason of my budget this is because my clients specifically set me a budget and also said there is some leniency. With staying in my budget I will learn to follow my finance plan and my client’s words. I will be able to develop a skill of learning that for some client’s money doesn’t come off trees and that there is a limit for some things. Environment: The environment I am working in is outside, so all pollution I make will affect the surrounding trees and garden. So I have to minimize pollution, how to do this? I will use minimal pollution products and I will do thorough research to come to a conclusion of which products to use. The skills I have formed are thinking about the environment and what happens when not taken care of and what products create minimal pollution.

  9. Current Designers Architect and Interior DesignerB.A. (Hons.), B.Arch., M.Regional & Urban Planning, M.D.I.A. Interior Designer, who has worked in the design industry for 20 yrs works in Adelaide and Queensland, he works with and --Architects Interior Designers. The work incorporated local and interstate projects where as the Design is primarily local. ’s styles are eclectic, he likes minimalism and lots of white surfaces, but he also has a very colourful side. He likes to mix old and new furnishings to help keep things interesting and to inject personality. doesn’t like reproduction styles such as Tuscan, and he prefers to not work with clients who like such things.  prefers to work with residential areas but he particularly likes working with apartments. ‘These provide challenges but also lots of opportunities for personality filled spaces’ believes it mainly comes down to clever planning and using furnishings that can perform multiple functions.  ‘I also like using a lot of white and I mostly avoid window treatments’.  He tends to use large items of furniture as he doesn’t believe that they make spaces seem smaller.  ‘In fact a few larger stylish items look way better than a selection of smaller ones’. I have been inspired by Designs with his use of exuberant and bold colours. He is able to maximize the use of small spaces and this inspires me because the space I am re-designing is reasonably small. has given me new ideas of maintaining old furniture in the space that I will be re-designing, and that the theme that I will be re-creating my space into is one that my client has seen in real life and this is Balinese.
