  1. CAN WE USE THE INTERNET EFFECTIVELY TO LEARN ABOUT EARTHQUAKES?

  2. NEW YORK CITY QUAKE • Epicenter: near the corner of 6th Avenue and West 50 Street • Magnitude M2.6 on the Richter scale

  3. What is an Earthquake? • An Earthquake is a series of shock waves generated from the brittle failure of rocks within the earth due to a build up of stress • The Epicenter is the point on the earth' surface directly above this failure

  4. Use The Internet • Go to this address: http://volweb.utk.edu/Schools/sullivan/colonial/equakes.htm • Click on “TASK 2”

  5. What did our ancestors believe? • Giant animals movements created earthquakes • Aristotle: winds within the earth shook the surface.

  6. What an epicenter looks like • Go back • Click on Task 7 Where is the Epicenter? What 3 cities are affected?

  7. Project: Find the Epicenter • Go Back • Click on Task 11 We can find the epicenter by looking at Seismic waves Seismic waves: waves that travel through the earth: P through solids liquids and gasses S—through only solids

  8. VIRTUAL EARTHQUAKE • Go down and click on “Japan Region” and “Submit Choice” • We need to measure the time intervals between P and S waves • CLICK on “VIEW SEISMOGRAMS”

  9. VIRTUAL EARTHQUAKE • What are the time intervals for each place? Pusan: 56, Tokyo 44, Akita 70 CLICK on “CONVERT S-P INTERVALS”

  10. VIRTUAL EARTHQUAKE • Go down to the graph. • Go across on time until you hit the line • Go down for the distance • Click on “Find Epicenter”

  11. VIRTUAL EARTHQUAKE • How did we do? • Click on “VIEW TRUE EPICENTER” • Where is the Epicenter?

  12. RICHTER SCALE • The values we calculated can be applied to the Richter Scale • What is our Magnitude? 6.7 our calculations are only .1 degrees off. The true value is 6.8

  13. What did we learn? • Did you learn something new? • Did you find this to be an effective way to learn about Earthquakes?

  14. Homework • If I was to assign you Homework I would ask you to find the Epicenter of one other location using “Virtual Earthquake”
