  5. The facts • Was the 54th quadrennial Presidential Election • Held on November 7th 2000 • President Bill Clinton vacated the Presidency in the case of serving 2 terms. • Bush running mate: Dick Cheney • Gore running mate: Joe Lieberman

  6. Bush Gore Election -An average Election. - Gore actually winning race. -Besides Tenn. Bush won most of the southern states, the mid west states and New Hampshire. Gore won New England and the other north eastern states, also Cali Oregon and Washington. All came down to the critical state (Florida) was a huge swing state in this election.

  7. Bush Gore Election • A “swing state” is considered to be a state with enough electoral votes to make a difference in a election; for ex PA with 23 electoral votes could “swing” the election either or. But Wyoming with only 3 electoral votes really doesn’t make a huge difference.

Bush Gore Election • Florida • Bush was beating Gore by more than 100,000 votes up until 4:30 am. • Gore then was only down by 2,000 votes • Total of 538 electoral college votes nationally. • To be President you need 270 • That’s why Florida was so important to both Bush and Gore. • Gore ended up with 266 electoral votes • Bush had 271 electoral votes. • Although Gore won the popular vote with 50,999,897 votes. • With Bush only having 50,456,002 votes.

Bush Gore Election • Gore asked for a recount in Florida, he believed there was controversy behind the ballots. • The most looked at counties in Florida was Broward, Miami Dade, Palm Beach and Volusia. • FL Sectary of State “Katherine Harris” said she would reject any recounts from those counties if they did be turned in by November 14th 20000.

Bush Gore Election • The Hanging Chad, Dimple or Pregnant Chad. • Paper Ballets, had to bunch a hole in a piece of paper for your vote. • This was also known as the “butterfly ballot” • This caused many over votes and under votes. • This election is similar to the elections of 1876 between Rutherford Hayes and Samuel Tilden.
