3. High School Graduation Requirements 1. 30 credits = 18 compulsory + 12 optional 2. Successful completion of the literacy test 3. 40 hours of community involvement

4. Literacy Test • You must pass this test in order to graduate with an OSSD. • The test can be written as often as necessary to pass, but it will only be offered once a year. • If you have taken the test but have not successfully passed, you qualify to take the literacy course to replace this requirement.

5. 40 Hours of Community Involvement What can’t you do? • Not a task you would normally do (chores) or your friend’s chores • Not something you do as a leisure activity (choir practice, basketball practice) • Can’t take the place of someone who normally gets paid to do this work (McDonalds, babysitting, etc.) • “Neighbourly goodwill” What can you do? • Activities for which you don’t get paid • helping at a food bank • peer tutoring • teaching Sunday school classes • coaching a youth soccer team

10. ESA Requirements • 2 arts credits in your major in each grade • Dropping ½ your major – separate application – see a counsellor – Deadline is March 9

11. For course selection, consider… • What are your plans for after high school? • What pathway will you take? Work? Apprenticeship? College? University? • What are the prerequisites for college or university entrance? Start researching now!

14. Choosing Courses… • All students must take a minimum of 6 courses. • Universities look at best 6 grade 12 U or M level courses • Some universities only want two “4M” courses, rest must be “4U” • English ENG4C vs. ENG4U

15. Math options for Grade 12 • MDM4U – Data Management pre-requisite MCF3M or MCR3U • MHF4U – Advanced Functions pre-requisite MCR3U • MCV4U – Calculus and Vectors co-requisite MHF4U

Looking ahead… Summary of University requirements: • Arts – usually no math – psychology usually requires a math course • Business – a mix – few will allow only 1 math, usually MHF4U; most need 2 • Engineering – usually 2 math (often MHF4U and MCV4U, although MDM may be possible) • Science – usually 2 math (often MHF4U and MCV4U)

Virtual School & Summer School • Full credit & remedial courses are available • Summer school info – May 2011 • **English will not be available through the TDSB for students with less than 26 credits this year** • Coop summer school – applications are due this month • Must select minimum of 6 courses on myblueprint.ca to qualify

23. External Music Credits • Grade VII Performance + Grade I Theory = AMX 3M1 • Grade VIII Performance + Grade II Theory = AMX 4M1 ** Students may not use more than one Grade 12 music credit in combination with an external credit for their credit count. Bring in exam results to have this credit entered on your transcript.

24. SAT/ACT • Considering a post-secondary school in the US? You are required to do the SAT or the ACT. • Consider writing this in May/June ‘11 then again in the fall of Grade 12 if necessary. • Visit www.collegeboard.com for more information.

31. ACCESS HIGH SCHOOL PLANNER Click on “Plan Courses”

32. Click on Add <Course> Click on the course you would like to select Click Add Course to Plan

33. HIGH SCHOOL PLANNER Click “View Progress” to view your Graduation Status Click “Submit” when you have selected your courses and are ready to submit

34. REVIEW AND SUBMIT COURSES Review your selections Click Confirm and Print when you are ready to submit Note: You will not be able to change your course selections in myBlueprint after this step. Please consult your Guidance Counsellor if you wish to make any changes after you have submitted your courses.

35. PRINT SIGN-OFF SHEET Congratulations! You’re done! Please print and return a signed copy of your Course Selection Sign-Off Sheet to your Counsellor or Teacher.
