  1. Gays as a Social Group

  2. In the Past Victim is the case study i have used for looking back to the past to see the attitude of the time was like. What i found was this film was before the law was changed and painted a picture of gay people to be criminals and a cast of from society. Having spoke to grandparents who were alive at this period of time before the changing of the law, this was a true reflection of how they were treated in society. Victim also showed me that many gay people were embrassed by this and so got married to a member of the opposite sex, known as a ‘beard’. It is widely believed that this particular piece of film lead to a change in the law which legalised being gay in the equal rights act of 1968. Due to many people feeling sympathy and sensing the injustice that gay people had to go through.

  3. Present Day Modern day people have a very different attitude to gay people, or at least they have to appear to have in certain social situations. Examples being the workplace, court and schools. One film i watched was ‘kick off’ by a director called ‘Rikki Beadle Blair’, who is well known for his gay rights compaigning. This film showed gay people in a very stereotypical way having them wearing pink clothes and talking in a camp manner. I think this is negative for gays as a social group as it shows them in a way which people can laugh at and ‘take the micky’ out of them. If someone was to watch this film and absorb their opinion through the hyperdermic needle theory then they would have a very stereotypical and negative veiw of the gay community. Another view of gays in the present day is one of more positive from many soap operas, these tend to be more positive as it shows gay people doing every day life things and not just dealing with gay issuses. Although positive portrayal is increase it is still very low, on average lesbian, gay and bisexual people were presented in a positive way for only 46 mins of programming out of 126 hours.

  4. My View on Gay People My first contact of hearing about gays was in the playground from a young age of about 8 years old, where it was used in a derogatory manner such as ‘batty boy’ or ‘rim raider’. I believe that children of that age to not have a access the much media showing gay people and so get there opinions through the two step flow theory off thier parents or relatives. As i grew older around the age of 13 most of my views came from comedy programmes, inparticular for me ‘Little Britian’. This meant that my views on gays was one that they are going to make me laugh or dress in a outlandish manner. In more recent times I feel as if my opinion is more mature as I have been exposed to more types of media containing gay people, especially as it has not been show gays in just a negative light. An example of this would be a film called ‘The Kids Are Alright’, where it shows a lesbian couple managing to overcome marriageable problems ans issues. I would now say my opinion has changed to one where I look apon them as equals and with no prejudice.

  5. The Future I believe that in the future that more will be done to deal with gays confidence and for them to come out to the world as being a gay. A recent article in the Guardian 11/11/11 talks about gay teenagers as being victims of abuse in schools and how this affects thier lives through self harming and even suicide. I believe that this will be further addressed in the future by schools doing more to crush the childish view that being gay is a bad thing, by showing them some media of gays in a positive light and maybe the hyperdermic needle theory with influence them to have a new opinion. Another type of media that I believe that will be used more by gay people in the future is websites such as ‘Stonewall’. As access to the internet increase the ability to search for uses and gratifications also rises, so ‘stonewall’ will be more easily accessed. This is a good platfrom for gays to feel positive about themselves as all the information on there is taylored to fill thier wants and needs and it gives them a chance to express themselves in dicussions with again prejudice views.
