  2. The Knight • Direct: A knight of the realm who has fought many battles around the world. He is a most distinguished man and very chivalrous. He is the father of the squire. • Indirect: He does not brag about himself and he fights for honor and God unlike his young son who fights for women and honor. • Past: He is a Knight of the Realm and in good standing. He is a true, perfect gentle-knight. • Present: General of Military who would protect his country from all who try to do it harm.

  3. Squire • Direct : He is of moderate height, with locks of gold, he is very agile, he sits his horse well as he seen service with the cavalry. He is his fathers son in some ways. • Indirect: The squire worries about getting the attention of women and desires their love. He is all about his looks and fights for women and the world not like his father the Knight. • Past: He attends to his father the knight and receives his training from him. • Present: Intern-A young person who learns from their elders or superiors about the job that is required of them.

  4. Yeoman • Direct: He dresses in green and wears a St. Christopher medal. • Indirect: He keeps his bows and arrows in pristine condition, he is prepared for anything. • Past: He is a member of the Knight’s household. He keeps all his equipment clean and at the ready, he is otherwise known as a huntsman. • Present: Today he could be seen as a Park Ranger/Forest Ranger. He would take care of the forests trees and animals.

  5. Host • Direct: Our host is the storyteller. He is hefty, manly, loud, and from the lower-class • Indirect: The host facilitates the flow of the tales as the pilgrims travel. He is essentially the tour guide and he must try to please them all. He is a good leader. • Past: Our host would have been the Inn Owner, as he would have known all the stories of the travelers who have passed through his tavern. • Present: Today as a tour guide he would provide you with all the knowledge of the area you are traveling plus antidotes of previous travelers.

  6. Time passes but some things never change. The characters of the Canterbury Tales are no exception. They have stood the test of time and are as relevant today as they were when Chaucer wrote them. The titles are not the same but the jobs are!
