  1. STABILITY

  2. What is stability? • Stability refers to how balanced an object is. • There are 3 main factors that effect the stability of an object including: • Centre of gravity (COG) • Line of gravity (LOG) • Base of support (BOS)

  3. Centre of Gravity • The centre of gravity refers to: The point at which the mass of an object is evenly distributed.

  4. Centre of Gravity The C.O.G is positioned according to the mass or weight of the object.

  5. It does not have to exist within the object but could be on the outside. Application: The closer the COG to the BOS the more stable an object will be.

  6. Line of Gravity • The Line of Gravity is a line that starts at the COG and stretches straight down to the ground. • It is also known as the line of action of the force of Gravity. COG LOG

  7. Application: If the line of gravity falls within the base of support then an object will be more stable. If the line of gravity falls outside the base of support then the object will be unstable and fall over.

  8. Base of Support • The base of support refers to the area between the points of contact an object has with the ground. Base of Support Points of Contact

  9. Application: The greater the base of support the more stable an object will be. Also the more points of contact and the larger the points of contact, the more stable an object will be.

  10. COUNTERBALANCE If you know that a force is going to be applied to an object the line of gravity can be moved towards the direction of the force. This will (in some capacity) counter act the force and make the object more stable. This is called COUNTERBALANCE.

  11. What could this girl do to make herself more stable on the skateboard? Describe how she would achieve this.

  12. Why is this man in a stable position to make a shot?

  13. 1. Which player is in a more stable position? Why? 2. Which player is less stable? Why?

  14. 1. What has this player done to stabilise himself for the shot? 2. What has he done to compensate for his arms moving forward?

  15. 1. What have these two people done to make them more stable? 2. Each Sumo Wrestler has an advantage over the other. What advantage does the smaller one have? What advantage does the larger one have?

  16. Give 3 reasons why the GD is unstable?
