  2. “The Life of David - Part 5” Introduction • Now David was about to face his greatest temptation on his way to the throne. • He would have to deal with the temptation to seek revenge against Saul.

  3. “The Life of David - Part 5” • Every one of us either has or will have to face the same temptation in our lives. • What we call it: • “My Rights” • “Justified retaliation”

  4. “The Life of David - Part 5” • What God’s Word says about it: • 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. • 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. (Romans 12:17-18)

  5. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. (Romans 12:19)

  8. “The Life of David - Part 5” • The Situation. • 1After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.” (1 Sam 24:1)

  9. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 2 So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. (1 Sam 24:2)

  10. “The Life of David - Part 5” • The Temptation. • 3He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. (1 Sam. 24:3)

  12. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 4The men said, “This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ ” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. (1 Sam. 24:4)

  13. “The Life of David - Part 5” • David responded in the flesh. • God responded in the Spirit. • 5Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. (1 Sam. 24:5)

  14. “The Life of David - Part 5” • David conquered his temptation. 6He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the LORD.” (1 Sam. 24:6)

  15. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 7With these words David rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. (1 Sam. 24:7)

  17. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 8Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. (1 Sam. 24:8)

Now understand and recognize that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. (1 Sam. 24:11)

  22. “The Life of David - Part 5” • David calls on Saul to let God judge between them. (12-15) • 12May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. (1 Sam. 24:12)

  24. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 15May the LORD be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.” (1 Sam. 24:15)

  27. “The Life of David - Part 5” • Saul accepts David’s words and seeks the blessings of God for David’s right actions. • 18You have just now told me of the good you did to me; the LORD delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. (1 Sam. 24:18)

  28. “The Life of David - Part 5” • 19When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today. (1 Sam. 24:19)

  29. “The Life of David - Part 5” Conclusion • David chose to do what was right in the sight of God, not men. 7When a man’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him. (Proverbs 16:7) • What can we learn from this event in the life of David?

  30. “The Life of David - Part 5” 1. Since man has vices; expect to be mistreated. 2. Since mistreatment is inevitable; anticipate feelings of revenge. 3. Since revenge is predictable; purpose to act biblically and not carnally.
