  2. Three Worlds • First World is seen as an industrialized capitalist nations • Second World is seen as communist nations • Third World is seen as any nation that did not fit in the first two categories

  3. Most Industrialized Nations • United States, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, Australia (see page 246-247) • 16 percent of the world’s population • 31 percent of the world’s land • Poor even live longer lives than average citizen in a 3rd World Country

  4. Industrialized Nations • Former Russia, Eastern European countries, Brazil, Spain, Turkey, South Africa, Chile (see page 246-247) • 20 percent of the land • 16 percent of the population • Lower annual incomes than most industrialized nations • They have indoor plumbing, phones, cars, & food

Least Industrialized Nations • Jamaica, Vietnam, Kenya, India, Egypt, Ethiopia, China (see page 246-247) • Poverty plagues many of these nations (income less than $1000/year) • 49 percent of the land • 68 percent of the population • No running water, indoor plumbing or access to physicians • Modern medicine has cut infant mortality but not births, population is rising

Modifying the Model • Model does help us pinpoint the differences among them • Question becomes how much industrialization does a nation need to become Industrialized Nation • Also what about countries who hold the worlds largest supply of oil (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran) • Many of these countries have modern hospitals, prenatal care, pure water systems, food and shelter • Kuwait, almost all of its citizens don’t work, they just get paid by the govt. for being citizens
