  3. Summary Information for 5 Projects • Volumes published: 215 - containing c. 115,000 documents • Volumes to be published: 106 - to contain c. 60,000 documents • Volumes in process: 19 • Production pace: 1 volume/12 months to 1 volume/24 months FFAC

Summary Information for 5 Projects • Annual 5-Project Total Budget - $4.5 M (Budgets vary from $500K-930K per project) • NHPRC annual support - $885,000 (19%) • Award Range (FY2011): $146,000 - $215,000 • NHPRC Support to Completion (at current rate of support) - $12 M • Parent Institutions – UVA, Mass. Historical Society, Princeton, Yale/Amer. Philos. Society FFAC

Summary Information for 5 Projects • Publishers – Presses at University of Virginia, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale • Number of Project Staff - range of 6-10 FTEs • Project work flow – varies among projects, depending on staffing, budget, editorial tasks • Completion Dates - range from 2021 to 2043 FFAC

Editorial Project Goals & Objectives • Specific Goals are a part of each NHPRC grant award (12 month intervals) • NHPRC requires six month progress reports from every grantee • NHPRC staff submit written reports to Commission on each project’s progress against goals • Commission considers project performance in evaluating requests for new funding FFAC

  8. NHPRC Special Initiatives re. Founders • “Early Access” Pilot Project - 2009 ($250,000) • Founders Online – Published Volumes - 2010 ($2 Million) • Founders Online – Unpublished Transcripts - 2011 ($2.5 Million) FFAC

  9. “Early Access” Pilot Project • Overall Goal - to undertake “proof of concept” project . Could significant transcription work be carried out successfully independent of project staff? • Milestone - to create sufficiently enhanced versions of 5,000 unpublished transcripts for online access • Award made to Documents Compass in 2009 FFAC

  10. “Early Access” Pilot Project • Pilot Participants – Adams & Madison projects • Documents Compass converted all items to standard XML format for online access • Documents Compass improved transcripts via a verification process • 10/2009 - 5,065 documents made available by UVA Press in a free “Early Access” section of Rotunda website FFAC

Founders Online Initiative Goals - • Phase 1 - Published materials (242 vols) freely available online by 2013 (Franklin Papers participation pending) • Phase 2 - Unpublished transcripts freely available online available via same resource • Phase 3 - Ongoing maintenance of this new resource as new volumes emerge and transcripts are completed and annotated FFAC

Founders Online - Published Volumes Goal – provide free online access to Founders documents & associated annotations • National Archives & University of Virginia Press signed cooperative agreement 10/2010 • Beta Website available 10/2011 • Full search features & complete site content by 9/2013 • Cost: $2,000,000 in NHPRC directed funds FFAC

Founders Online - Unpublished Transcripts Goal – Provide free online access to pre-publication versions of Founders documents • 5 Founders projects have completed preliminary transcripts for c. 60,000 items • Must enhance transcripts via further verification & prepare them for online searching • Editorial annotations are not included FFAC
