  1. Introduction to the M16A4

  2. M16A4 TRAINING • Characteristics • Zero Procedures • Qualification Standards • Summary

  3. Characteristics • WEIGHT (pounds):approx 9.23 • LENGTH (inches):39.63 • OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS: • Barrel rifling-right hand 1 twist (inches)=7 • Muzzle velocity (feet per second)=3,100 • Cyclic rate of fire (rounds per minute)=800 • Fires either Semiautomatic or Three-round Burst

  4. Characteristics MAXIMUM EFFECTIVE RATE OF FIRE: Semiautomatic (rounds per minute)=45 Burst (3-round bursts) (rounds per minute)= 90 Sustained (rounds per minute)= 12-15 • RANGE (meters): • Maximum range= 3,600 • Maximum effective range • Point target = 550 • Area target= 600

  5. Characteristics Unique Features • Carrying Handle detaches from the Upper Receiver. • Exposes a MIL –Standard 1913 rail. • Allows the mounting of various optics closer to eye level • and a more natural cheek to stock weld

  6. Characteristics Detachable Carrying Handle Rear Sight Aperture Mounting Knobs Elevation Knob

  7. Characteristics Detachable Carrying Handle • To remove carrying handle: • Unscrew mounting knobs counter clockwise • Lift carrying handle off upper receiver

  8. Characteristics Rail Adapter System • RAIL ADAPTER SYSTEM • The M5 rail adapter system (RAS) consists of a set of lightweight sections that replace the standard hand guards • Rails are MIL-standard 1913 • Is standard issue on the M16A4 • Provides a secure mounting point for various accessories

  9. Characteristics Rail Adapter System • Accessories may be mounted on the top, left and right side • of the RAS • The bottom rail of the RAS was designed for nonaiming • devices and will not retain zero.

  10. Characteristics Rail Adapter System • Rail Cover/ Heat Shield • Protects the shooter’s hand from direct contact with the • metal parts of the RAS • Protects the RAS surfaces from excess wear and damage • Are available in 11-, 9-, 6-, 5-, and 4-rib sections

  11. Characteristics Rail Adapter System spring latch • Rail Covers/ Heat Shield Removal • Apply thumb pressure to the center of the spring latch • Slide in the desired direction

  12. Characteristics Rail Adapter System Address Marking • Address Markings • Assists the user in remounting an accessory in the same • position to repeat zero • Allows standardization on precisely where to mount • certain accessories

  13. Zeroing Procedures SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: • The M16A2 zero target is used • Two consecutive 3 rd groups with 5 of 6 rds in the • 4CM circle • Majority of the round must be inside the circle

  14. Zeroing Procedures Mechanically Zeroing the M16A4. • Adjust the front sight post (1) up or down until the base of the front sight post is flush with the front sight post housing (2). • Adjust the elevation knob (3) counterclockwise, when viewed from above, until the rear sight assembly (4) rests flush with the carrying handle and the 6/3 marking is aligned with the index line (5) on the left side of the carrying handle. • Position the apertures (6) so the unmarked aperture is up and the 0-200 meter aperture is down. Rotate the windage knob (7) to align the index mark on the 0-200 meter aperture with the long center index line (8) on the rear sight assembly.

  15. Zeroing Procedures Battle sight Zero the M16A4. • Adjust the elevation knob (1) counterclockwise, when viewed from above, until the rear sight assembly (2) rests flush with the detachable carrying handle and the 6/3 marking is aligned with the index line (3) on the left side of the detachable carrying handle. • Adjust the elevation knob two clicks clockwise so the index line on the left side of the detachable carrying handle is aligned with the “Z” on the elevation knob. • Position the apertures (4) so the unmarked aperture is up and the 0-200 meter aperture is down. Rotate the windage knob (5) to align the index mark on the 0-200 meter aperture with the long center index line (6) on the rear sight assembly.

  16. Qualification Standards With Iron Sights: 23 hits out of 40 target exposures. With M68 CCO: 23 hits out of 40 target exposures.

  17. Summary • M16A4 is similar in operation to the M16A2 • Has a detachable carrying handle • Comes standard with the M5 RAS • Zeroing the iron sight is similar to the M16A2 • Qualification standards are the same
