  2. School Board Meeting • Meeting attended on April 7rh, 2011 • Winona School District • Winona City Hall

Agenda • The list for the Agenda was: • Student Achievement • Reports, good news, AYP presentation, Smartboard update, and WMS Schedule Update. • Safe and Welcoming Learning Environment • STEM Choice program, updates, class size and range. • Efficient and Effective Operations • 2011-12 school calendar options, Nordic ski proposal, Central reuse task force, school board retreat update, hiring and transfer process, HS AHU replacement bids, 2011-2012 budget update • Local/ State/ Federal Mandates and Policies • Policies 1st reading and action • Announcements

Attendance At The Meeting • The members of the School Board that were in attendance • Ben Baratto- Clerk/ Treasurer • Jay Kohner- At Large • Steve Schild- 1st district • Mohamed Elhindi- 2nd district • Michelle Langowski- 3rd district • Gregory Fellman- Chair • Gary Shurson- Vice Chair • Dr. Scott Hannon- Superintendent

  5. Others In Attendance • There were 10 members of the community that attended the meeting. • This did include 4 middle school staff.

  6. Concerns • Technology • The school was just getting technology which was vastly different than other schools that have had the technology of Smartboards and iPads for years. • Also concern with not being able to adequately teaching if something goes wrong with the technology.

  7. Main Issues Discussed • Technology • They are behind other schools and not all of their smartboards have been installed. • AYP • How the schools need to change to meet AYP • And the Title I assistance is it working? • Changing the schedule for next year • Moving from a 7 period to a 6 period day at the middle school

  8. Budget • Will change next year for the middle school • Change in the number of staff in the school. • Decrease in the budget due to the cost of Smartboards • Expensive cost of providing Smartboards in every classroom

  9. Personnel Matters • The Middle School is changing the number of periods from 7-6 • Meaning layoffs will occur because they will not need as many teachers

  10. Insight Gained • I learned from attending a school board meeting • That it is a place for problems occurring in any of the schools to be addressed • The community is able to come and speak their concerns • That in Winona they make a point to make sure that everyone understand AYP
