  3. We already know that cloning is found in nature… • Binary Fission • Budding • Fragmentation • Vegetative reproduction • Spores Are all examples of cloning.

  4. But how about more complex animals? Cloning can happen in complex animals, but only with the assistance of humans. Humans copy nature in order to produce clones. This can be used: • To save the genetic information of endangered animal species • To mass-produce an organism with a certain trait, such as disease resistance

  5. 1. Reproductive Cloning • Used to produce a genetic duplicate of an existing or dead organism with desirable qualities. • Adult DNA cloning.

How it works • Remove the nucleus of an egg cell • Get a somatic nucleus from the animal you want to clone • Remove the nucleus and transplant this nucleus into the egg cell, or fuse the two cells together • You are left with an egg cell which has a nucleus belonging to the animal you want to clone • This egg is inserted into surrogate mother

Therapeutic Cloning • Used to correct health problems such as diabetes, spinal injuries or Parkinson’s disease. • Stem cells are used for this purpose (both human and embryonic). • Embryonic stem cells are better because they are not yet specialized, are highly adaptable and can become any one of our 200 types of body cells. • Stem cell research is highly debated today.

  8. Stem Cell Debate Stem Cells Can also be harvested harmlessly from amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood and also from adult tissue. Stem Cells • Can be achieved by destroying embryos, thus the highly controversial nature of stem cells. Grouping all stem cells under the same umbrella has caused the research to hit bumps on the road, such as lack of funding and being illegal in some countries.
