Enhancements to Strategic Munitions Distribution Network (SMDN) Update

This document outlines the Strategic Munitions Distribution Network (SMDN) conceptual framework. Focused on less-than-truckload (LTL) consolidation and minimizing the public exposure of Ammunition and Explosives (AA&E), the program has evolved through several phases. Initially tested at Blue Grass AD in FY02, SMDN identified the need for automation and funding support. Further phases involve the development of sourcing tools, centralized ammunition management, depot fielding, business rule formulation, and ensuring service buy-in for enhanced requirements visibility and implementation.

Strategic Munitions Distribution Network (SMDN) • SMDN is a concept focused on LTL consolidation and reduction of AA&E public exposure • Phase I • Concept was tested at Blue Grass AD in FY02 (Nov-Dec) • Limited scope (Army only) • Identified the need for automation support and funding • Phase II • Sourcing/LTL consolidation tool development (Load/Haz Captain) • NICP integration and initiate depot fielding (Funding required – 500K) • Supports Centralized Ammunition Management • Phase III • Complete depot fielding • Develop SMDN business rules • Testing/Cost Analysis (Direct Labor vs. SDT) • Phase IV • SMDN Service buy-in • Requirements visibility/connectivity • Implementation
