This insightful exploration delves into the phenomenon of overhydration and its deadly consequences, as seen in cases like Jennifer Strange and others who suffered fatal outcomes after excessive water intake. Water is crucial for life, but too much can disrupt cellular function and lead to serious health issues. This discussion will cover the mechanisms of cell transport, how cells obtain necessary materials while eliminating waste, and the role of cell membranes in regulating these processes. Engage in a hypothesis-driven investigation to understand the impact of aqueous environments on cells.

  1. Cell transport or How cells get what they need And get rid of what they don’t!

  2. Hold Your Wee For A Wii! • On Friday, Jan 12, 2007, Jennifer Strange participated in a radio contest to win a Nintendo Wii for her children. • She came in 2nd place and went home with 2 tickets to a Justin Timberlake concert.

  3. A few hours later, her body was discovered at her home. There was no visible trauma. Before leaving the station she complained of a headache. Jennifer Strange with her husband and three children.

  4. Cassandra Killpack of Utah was at home with her parents when she began complaining of dizziness and eventually lost consciousness. She was 4 years old. 3 year old Rosita Gonzales was with her babysitter when she lost consciousness and died on October 14, 2002. Cassandra Killpack

  5. Andy Warhol, famous for his paintings of Campbell’s Soup Cans, Marylin Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor died at New York Hospital on February 22, 1987. He was recovering from gallbladder surgery.

  6. Cynthia Lucero was finishing her 2nd marathon. She made it to mile marker 22 when she collapsed. She died several hours later. The cause of death for all five of these people is the same. Cynthia Lucero

  7. What killed these people? Talk with your group and make a list of at least 5 things that could have happened.

  8. Jennifer Strange was participating in a radio contest titled “Hold Your Wee For A Wii.” Before leaving the station, she drank up to 2 gallons of water. • Cassandra Killpack and Rosita • Gonzalez each drank up to 3 quarts of • water before they died. • Andy Warhol’s condition was not • adequately monitored and he was • overloaded with fluids intravenously.

  9. Water is an essential part of living systems (bodies), how can it be deadly? Discuss this with your group and develop a hypothesis about what happens when your body takes in too much water.

  10. The problems you will investigate in lab are: • How do cells respond to various aqueous environments around them? • How do cells obtain the materials necessary for them to survive and function? And get rid of harmful waste? • How does the cell membrane regulate the movement of materials in and out of the cell?
