Basic Terminology • Required Rotation= graduation requirement • (AI)Acting Internship= M,A,I,S - 4 weeks each – scheduled in Phase I • Electives- 2 or 4 weeks each - total of 16 weeks - Phase II • Scholars’ Week– required 2 out of 3 opportunities • SW 5is scheduled at the end of FYSH • Huntsville - Medicine & Surgery, have the 5th week as SW in IA or VB • Birmingham –28-404 through 28-411, have the 5th week as SW in IA or VB – regardless of course category • O= selected in Phase I - indicates non AI time activity

  14. FYSHFourth Year Scheduling Helper • Similar to, but not the same as WISH • A computer program designed to assist in planning a “career goal oriented” 4th year • Requires an Approved Academic Advisor to meet & plan senior year. Advisor signature is required on course approval form.

  18. Phase I • SchedulesActing Internships “AI” • For each Categorylist multiple courses ranked in order of importance • Sub-blocks (dates)rank in order of importance • electives, interviews, Step II & Off are reserved by using category O

  19. Phase I - Entry • Changes may be made until deadline • First 7 requests for O are guaranteed • Each sub-block– you must prioritize & list all 5 categories in order of preference (example MISAO, OSIAM)

  20. Phase I Signed Career Advisor Approval Form must be received by the Birmingham Scheduler before Phase I deadline for your entry to be recognized Retaincopy of Career Advisor Approval Home Campus & B’ham Schedulerwill retain copies and refer to it during the year

  21. Phase II Replace O dates– with electives, interviews, Step II Reminder - do not schedule a course during interviews or Step IIBIG Mistake! Reminder – maximum 2 days “off” during a 4 week rotation with departmental PRE- approval - no days off from 2 week rotations even with department approval

  22. Scholars’ Week 5 - SWISH (completed at the same time BUT not a part of FYSH) • Go to SWISHentry screen to schedule List several courses of interest • Don’t forget!Mandatory SW assignments are assigned in IA for: B’ham28-404 through 28-411 HuntsvilleMedicine & Surgery

Visiting Electives FYSHreserves time for visiting electives Applications- processed by your scheduler (signatures, seal, letter, etc. & makes a copy) Acceptancemust be given to your scheduler for manual entry prior to first day (or the course is NOT scheduled) Do not assume it is scheduled because you reserved time in FYSH.   24. Research • Must be listed on Advisor Approval Form • Student makes contact with a preceptor • Is entered manually by scheduler after receiving approval from the Department Chair e-mailed to braswell@uab.edu & aboyd@uab.edu • include preceptor’s name, project title, and dates

  26. Computer / Entry • Entry to the program can be from any windows based PC running Internet Explorer and an Internet connection • Cannot use a Macintosh • Changes can be made at any time and as often as you want prior to the deadline • Time of entry does NOT affect randomization.
