Managing Corporate News • Press Releases • It’s a communication from the PR Department to the News Media to transmit your message to the target public. • Few musts • Have good contacts with Journalists, editors, ad agencies, TV channels and radio stations to consider your story newsworthy • Story should be interesting for the local audience • Story should be timely • Should be unique—create interest.

Press Conference • Usual announcements • Annual results/Quarterly Results • New projects • Merger/ Acquisition • Following a crisis • Three stages • Opening Statement • Distribution of Opening statement to the group present • Questions from the people present • End the Press conference by • Saying.” I will take the last question now” • Someone else from your office can end it for you. • Be careful about what you say as everything will be recorded.

Op-Ed Pieces • Newspapers TV Channels alert company’s PR Department that they will be making an editorial statement on some of their controversial issue. • The channel may ask for an OP-ed statement contrary to that will appear on the editorial page or a portion of a newscast. • Incase you do not get any prior notice from the channel, you can respond at a later date with an Op-ed communication stating / clarifying your position on the controversial issue. • The response should be well thought of vetted by / spoken by a lawyer representing the company.

  7. Letter to the editor • Must be short, contain factual information with your name and designation written. • These may be to • Clarify an issue • Correct a mistake • Express a needed change • Reaction to a a situation • Offer an opinion

  8. Company Spokesperson • Is an experienced, articulate, confident to discuss all aspects of the issue

  9. HW (Homework/ Hostel work) • Read Checklist 5.5 on page 132 of the textbook. • Watch Business Channels on TV tonight and note effective and ineffective use of these guidelines by different company spokespersons.
