  2. Industry vs. Environment • Relationships between environment and industry • Commercial Fishing • Hog Farming • Real Estate Development vs. erosion of sand dunes • Severe Weather events: Hurricanes • Wildlife Refuges

  3. Big Ideas Introduce students to global issues such as environmental damage and depletion of resources. Examine issues that pit industry versus environment. Expose students to the culture and history of coastal North Carolina. Examples: Commercial fishing and coastal agribusiness (hog farms)

  4. Product • The goal is student research and problem solving! • Basic problem: The Coast is in trouble! What can we do about it? • Social Studies classes will work on research and creating an ethical solution to North Carolina’s problems. • All HS and MS grades will meet separately and engage in a roundtable discussion for solutions and to exchange sources. • A week later, student representatives will present their findings and note how their research progressed and how it changed throughout the unit. • A week after that . . . We visit the Outer Banks!

  6. Big Field Trip • A three-day proposed trip to the Outer Banks • Wednesday – Drive to The Shore, Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, Fort Raleigh. Overnight in the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. • Thursday – Morning - Cape Hatteras High School. School has its own oyster farm and fish hatchery. Pea Island Wildlife Refuge. Afternoon – Commercial fishing village of Wanchese. Examine Fish House and presentation. Stay in motel? Camp? • Friday – Morning activity? On the way back . . . Alligator River Wildlife Refuge? Hog Farm?

  7. Overfishing Our oceans are becoming depleted, especially on the East Coast. What do we do? Stop fishing?

  8. Not so simple . . . Some depend on commercial fishing for their way of life. Fishing = Jobs

  9. Coastal Studies Institute UNC and Cape Hatteras High School Partnership Practice Aquaculture 1000 foot oyster reef - Hatchery for sea bass and flounder But is aquaculture the answer? (Fishermen hate fish farms)

  10. Nearby village of Wanchese Commercial Fishing town that depends on wild fish stocks Contact – Micah Daniels, Fish Wharf restaurant owner. 4th generation commercial fisher(wo)man, enthusiastic father on the Board of Fisheries . . . And public school teacher.

  11. NC Aquarium Also on Roanoke Island Overnight tour of the aquarium! Sleep with the fishes!

MS/HS Differentiation • We might ask for a separate introduction assembly for the Middle School and High School to phrase the issues in a different light. • Middle School students will have the option to focus more upon the culture and history of Coastal North Carolina (i.e. pirates, the Wright Brothers, Geography, etc)

  20. In Conclusion • Students will be immersed in a local issue that weaves biology, economics, and the culture of the coast. They will be engaged throughout the unit in the research process and at the end, visit the site where all these factors play out.
