  1. Nitrogen Flux Workshop Fall NADP Meeting 2013Update

  2. A workshop inviting talks related to total nitrogen deposition was proposed to be held in conjunction with the 2013 fall NADP meeting.new techniques for measuring air-surface exchange fluxes of reactive nitrogen in natural and agricultural landscapes; techniques for quantifying bulk and speciated dry and wet deposition of organic nitrogen compounds; site-specific examples of total nitrogen deposition budgets; the roles of in-canopy air chemistry and surface chemistry in regulating net canopy-scale nitrogen fluxes; analysis of uncertainty in measured and modeled air-surface exchange fluxes; use of low-cost time-integrated measurements of air concentrations to infer dry deposition of reactive nitrogen compounds; modeling of nitrogen air-surface exchange with specific emphasis on bi-directional modeling frameworks; development of a common air-surface exchange modeling framework suitable for reactive nitrogen, acid gases, aerosols, ozone, and volatile organic compounds.

  3. Received good response from initial email to gauge interest from groups that do not typically attend NADP meetings.Potentially 30 attendees from Europe, Asia, and U.S./Canadian groups.University of HelsinkiINRA AgroParisTechCenter for Ecology and Hydrology, EdinburghChina Agricultural UniversityHungarian Meteorological InstituteTNO NetherlandsNOAA, NASA, University of Toronto

  4. Possible Scenarios for Format of Fall 2013 TDEP Flux Workshop1) Integrate individual talks into regular NADP meeting. Friday would be organized as a typical workshop, with a few overview talks in the morning, followed by breakout groups through late morning and early afternoon. Breakout groups would be limited to three, each with a couple of questions for discussion. Groups would provide recommendations and research priorities related to charge questions. Reconvene in the afternoon.Pro – End up with a “product”Con – Risky. Need good moderators. Lots of preparation. Not much time.

  5. 2) Friday would be a series of as many short presentations as possible, grouped essentially a continuation of the NADP meeting but focused around the workshop topic areas.Pro – Can consolidate TDEP related talksCon – Discussion time limited3) Integrate most of the individual talks into the regular NADP sessions where appropriate or have a single regular session (plus poster session). On Friday, have a series of 6 or 7 longer, more informal talks, lasting an hour. These could be a combination of invited talks on specific topics and from general submissions that directly address TDEP priorities. We could have a list of questions “chambered” to stimulate discussion.Pro – Lots of discussion. Con – ?

  6. Next Steps1) Finalize format2) Finalize lists of priority topic areas3) Send out “save the date” to invitees4) Send out official call for abstracts with NADP call5) Finalize decisions regarding options for supporting travel costs for some invitees Key speakers Students
