  15. The Sun – Facts • The Sun is the largest object in the solar system. • It is our closest star and is believed to be over 4 billion years old. • There are storms on the surface of the Sun. These storms are known as ‘sunspots’, because they look like spots on the sun. Next Index

  16. The Sun – Facts • The centre (or core) of the Sun is very hot. A process called ‘nuclear fusion’ takes place there. Nuclear fusion produces lots of energy. Some of this energy travels out into space as heat and light. Some of it arrives at Earth. • It is very dangerous to look directly at the Sun. Next Index

  17. Shadows Shadows are formed when light from a source is blocked. When the Sun shines on an object it forms a shadow on the ground. Next Index

  20. The Sun appears to move through the day but, in fact, the Sun does not move. It is the Earth rotating on its axis, which makes it seem that the Sun is moving. As the Sun appears to move and gets higher in the sky, the shadows get shorter. In the morning and evening the Sun is lower in the sky so the shadows are longer. Next Index
