King in Chicago, 1966 • Chicago’s mayor, Richard Daley, respected MLK and cautioned police not to use violence against King’s demonstrators • When King attempted to march into the white ethnic neighborhood of Marquette Park and the all-white suburb of Cicero, he was forced to retreat due to virulent white rage and black militancy • King realized race was not just a “Southern” issue and he looked on to traveling the country fighting racism and poverty

  3. King’s Assassination • In 1968 King went to Memphis to address black sanitation workers who had gone on strike • He was murdered by James Earl Ray while standing on a balcony in Memphis • This unleashed outrage in black communities; more than 25 cities experienced uprising • Civil Rights Act of 1968 – had been pushed by King, passed after his murder. Outlawed discrimination in the sale or rental of housing
