  2. The Slippery Slope of Sin • Have you ever been stopped cold in your tracks like Jerome was? • Were you grateful later that you did not follow through with your planned sin? • Or do you live with the regret of sin only to wish that a Mrs. Nolan had come your way? • Accountability can sometimes protect us from ourselves.

  3. I. David’s Descent into Sin • David’s temptation followed a longstanding pattern. See 2 Samuel 11:2-5. • He saw. • He desired. • He took. • Consequences: Sin gives birth to more sin.

  4. II. The Pattern of Sin • Eve had a similar descent into sin in the Garden. See Genesis 3:1-7. • She saw. • She desired. • She took. • Consequences: Sin gives birth to more sin. • James notes a similar pattern. See James 1:13-14.

  5. III. The Forgiveness of Sins • God stands willing to forgive our sins. See 1 John 1:8-9. • Forgiveness of sins doesn’t cancel consequences.

  6. IV. The Prevention of Sexual Sins • “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” – Benjamin Franklin • If it can happen to David, it can happen to any of us. • Infidelity: any emotional or sexual intimacy that violates trust.

  7. D. Building Hedges around your marriage. • Hedges at work. • Pull away from flirtatious behaviors. Pull away from physical touch. • Don’t ride in a car with the opposite sex without a third party present. • Don’t make personal phone calls to co-workers of the opposite sex. • Don’t lunch with the same people every day, unless it is as a group.

  8. D. Building Hedges around your marriage. • Hedges at work. • Keep emails strictly business. • Talk about your spouse positively to your co-workers. • Be careful about lingering eye contact. • Only appropriate physical touch is a handshake. • If traveling, don’t get adjoining hotel rooms. Ask for different floors. • Meet in the lobby, not in a room.

  9. D. Building Hedges around your marriage. • Hedges at home. • Eliminate TV temptation—get rid of premium movie channels. • Do not drive the opposite sex babysitter home alone. • Keep appropriate boundaries with neighbors. • Be especially careful with single parents who need helping hands.

  10. D. Building Hedges around your marriage. • Hedges at church. • Always serve together in groups on ministry projects. • Never counsel the opposite sex.

  11. D. Building Hedges around your marriage. • Hedges for hobbies. • Learn to share your spouse’s hobby. • Give up a hobby that puts you in a vulnerable position. • Never enjoy a hobby alone with a person of the opposite sex.

  12. IV. The Prevention of Sexual Sins • Cultivate your relationship with your spouse. • Learn to be content with the spouse God gave you. • Cultivate accountability with your mate. A same-sex accountability partner is also a great idea. • If you are having problems, ask a trusted, mature Christian couple for help.
