Plan a year of diverse PTA programs that prioritize family engagement, reflection, education, health advocacy, and more! Use the KISS Method to set realistic goals and build a strong team. Plan ahead, do research, and create a comprehensive calendar. Follow the 3-1 Rule for program-to-fundraiser ratio. Take care of business by voting on proposed programs and appointing committee members. Evaluate and report programs using provided forms. Embrace plot twists and roll with it!

  3. KISS METHOD Keep It Simple Sweetie! Set goals. Plan the year realistically. Build a good team Plan ahead Know what details are important, and what can be flexible.

  4. PLANNING THE PROGRAM YEAR

STEP 1: BRAINSTORM IDEAS • Prioritize programs that work towards your goals! • Keep some of the traditional programs you run at your school AND consider trying something new! • Determine how full you want the calendar to be • Get an idea of what is realistic • Consider all of the ideas that are brought to the table. PLANNING THE PROGRAM YEAR

STEP 2: DO SOME RESEARCH • Look at the community calendars (school calendar, sports calendars, holidays, etc)_ • Make a rough budget to see if it is cost effective • Float the ideas past your principal • Check the Insurance Guide and/or call AIM to ensure that all PTA activities are covered by insurance PLANNING THE PROGRAM YEAR

STEP 3: Plan your calendar for the year • Start with your meeting schedule- board meetings AND association meetings • Add Family Nights to the calendar • Write in fundraisers (following the 3-1 Rule) PLANNING THE PROGRAM YEAR PRO TIP In PTA we use a guideline called “3-1”. This guideline means you have at least 3 “give back” programs for every 1 fundraiser you run.

Taking Care of Business…. • Vote to approve the proposed programs • Vote to put budget needs into the Annual Budget • Vote to release funds for programs as needed • Appoint a Committee Chairman for each program • Appoint committee members to help the Chairman • Let the COMMITTEE do the work to plan the event. *Janet, If you NEED blue table clothes, join the committee. • Debrief with the committee after the event • Report to the association about the event.

  11. Pro Tip: No matter how hard you work, how much you plan, or who is on your team, Something will not go according to plan. Just know ahead of time that you are going to have to roll with it. PTA= Plot Twist! Action!

PTA Program Ideas • Family Resource Center • A volunteer program with lots of options • Communicating in parents’ home language • Convenient meeting times and locations Welcoming All Families Standard 1: Welcoming all families into the school community—Families are active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued, and connected to each other, to school staff, and to what students are learning and doing in class.

Communicating Effectively Standard 2: Communicating effectively—Families and school staff engage in regular, two-way, meaningful communication about student learning.

Explain test scores • Have principal explain academic goals • Plan family learning events • Provide resources to support learning at home Support Student Success Standard 3: Supporting student success—Families and school staff continuously collaborate to support students’ learning and healthy development both at home and at school, and have regular opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and skills to do so effectively.

Explain parent rights & responsibilities • Parents & staff work together on concerns • Provide parents with advocacy training • Sponsor issue discussions Speaking Up for All Children Standard 3: Supporting student success—Families and school staff continuously collaborate to support students’ learning and healthy development both at home and at school, and have regular opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and skills to do so effectively.

School has policy of shared decision making • Train parents to sit on LCAP and other committees • Sponsor forums about proposed changes Shared Power Standard 5: Sharing power—Families and school staff are equal partners in decisions that affect children and families and together inform, influence, and create policies, practices, and programs.

Engage community groups to support student success • School serves as a community center Community Collaboration Standard 6: Collaborating with community—Families and school staff collaborate with community members to connect students, families, and staff to expanded learning opportunities, community services, and civic participation.

Honorary Service Awards are awarded throughout the year and designed as a unique way for PTA units, councils and districts to publicly acknowledge both individuals and organizations for outstanding community service to children and youth in a community.
