  1. 2014-15PDU TitleProfessional Development Unit By: Ashley Maurer, MS CCC-SLP Speech/Language Department – Ashley & Oakland Elementary

  2. During the course of this PDU, what three instructional strategies did I implement? What strategy worked best? Why? • Collaboration in whole group on important key areas of therapeutic content and how to effectively organize information to promote transparency for users/site visitors along with quick material access • Engagement in shared document through Google for ongoing conversations to trouble shoot problem and support peers within phases of wiki development • Collaboration in small group and email correspondence with peers for planning shared resources and discussion in effective means and categorization of therapy resources

  3. How did I apply the PDU strategies to thedevelopment of the website? (examples) Who did I collaborate with during the PDU? Discuss the waysyou collaborated while implementing the PDU strategies. • Whole group collaboration in editing and structural set up of wiki-space website • Whole group collaborative in meetings and online shared files to plan and areas of importance in collection of resources and materials • Uploading resources and adding imagine and text to wiki space website as an editor to share information and apply newly learnt technical knowledge

  4. What did I learn to do as a result of the PDU and strategy implementation in my practice? • How to edit content pages within wiki space • How to upload and organize materials within a shared wiki space • Evaluated the effectiveness and user transparency of my resources • Naming/Title and coding of my resources • Promoting understanding of target population and implementation of resource into a therapy session for unfamiliar SLPs accessing content

  5. Why is this PDU action research process important to my students learning and to my growth as a professional? • An organized central resource for SLPs in the district • Having this creates “no-cost” access to new therapy materials and informational resources, thus creating less strain on an individual’s need to allocate his/her limited annual budget from the department for purchase of materials that target the student needs within an ever changing working caseload • Resource access using website technology • Minimizes demand/need placed on the department’s physical therapy resource library, which requires a SLP to “check-out” an item for a set period of time, thus prohibiting other SLPs from accessing the same resource until it is returned • Creates an immediate availability and access option for use of desired resource • Promotes creativity and individualized therapy planning • DPS district continues to grow and expand bring more variety and diversity in school communities and in student populations. Our upload content contains a variety of therapy materials ranging from dedicated speech/language therapy lessons to activities designed for general population with specialized application design to meet children’s needs and support the SLPs management of workload balance

  6. PDU Data AnalysisReflecting on the data you have collected, how did this experience impact instruction, progress monitoring, student performance, and your own practice? • Results of peer-based surveys: pre and post surveys used to collect practical information related to present practice of therapy material use, discovery, and time available for planning • Cost effective for budgeting funds for adding and expanding instructional resources to meet student needs per goals and objectives • Time saved through ability to remotely assess and review uploaded content using website from district computer from any location at any time

  7. How will I apply my new learning in the future to further my practice? What are my next steps? • Explore resources on the website • Improve time management and planning • Increase knowledge in areas of need • Ongoing professional development

Additional resources in screenings tools and informal assessment measures used for diverse cultural and linguistic populations • 2 things that you took away from the PDU this year: how to take on a role of editor with a wikispace – adding files, pictures, and text based content and knowledge of areas my peers have specialized knowledge or expertise to build additional collaborative conversations and relationships within a large SSP population group • 1 piece of constructive criticism – more directional guidelines and structure to build uniformity in the appearance of wiki space pages with respect to formatting (font, sizing, color, spacing)
