  1. 2014-15SLO ProcessProfessional Development Unit

  2. What new instructional strategies did I implement in my classroom/practice during the course of the PDU? • Reading Strategies • Primary and secondary source analysis • Marking the Text • Annotating sources • Summarizing main ideas • Writing Strategies • Thesis Statement practice • Outlining/graphic organizers • Paraphrasing • Identifying parts of an argument

  3. How did I apply the PDU strategies in my classroom? (examples) How did I collaborate with my team about implementing the PDU strategies? Students worked together in groups to analyze primary and secondary sources. Their task was to create a poster with the assigned documents and break them down by identifying the main idea and evidence that supported the document-based question being asked. Students were also asked to mark the text (number paragraphs, highlight/underline and circle words they did not know). After analyzing the documents, student were asked to engage in the writing process. The final task would be an argumentative essay answering the DBQ prompt. Throughout the writing process students were taught to write a thesis statement, organize their thoughts and evidence in an outline or graphic organizer and then complete an in-class essay.

  4. What three strategies did I implement from the study section of the PDU? What strategy worked best? Why? • Group Document Analysis Poster: Throughout the SLO process I continually modified the document analysis piece of the DBQ process, at the beginning I had students work individually on analyzing the documents and by the end I had students working together in groups. Students benefited from working collaboratively, and positive results were evident in the data. • Marking the Text: Marking the Text has been successful with my students, it has made the students interact with the text more. Students were able to easily identify possible evidence from the documents that could be used in their essays. • Pre-writing Graphic Organizer: Using a graphic organizer has helped the students visually organize their arguments. In the past students struggled with including all their parts of their argument in their essays.

  5. What did I learn to do differently as a result of the PDU and strategy implementation in my classroom? Based on my participation in this year’s SLO process I am focusing on more intentional grouping and increasing or decreasing scaffolds based on students’ ability levels. By intentionally grouping students by ability will allow me to provide specific scaffolds based on the needs of each group.

  6. Why is this PDU action research process important to my students learning and to my growth as a professional? The SLO process has been important to student learning because the data analysis allows me to continually reflect on students’ progress and on the implementation of various strategies. Rather than waiting until the end of the year to reflect on the school year, I am able to modify my teaching throughout the year. This process reiterates the importance reflecting on my practice in order to continue to grow and learn as a professional.

  7. PDU Data AnalysisReflecting on the data you have collected during trimester 1 and 2, how did this experience impact trimester 3 instruction, progress monitoring, student performance, and your own practice? By reviewing the data I was able to break down the writing and analysis processes with my students and determine the exact areas were my students are struggling. I feel I am able to incorporate new strategies that helped my students improve on their reading and writing skills in the upcoming trimester. Also, students were able to monitor their progress and reflect on how they are improving throughout the term.

  8. How will I apply my new learning in the future to further my practice? What are my next steps? I will continue to collect and analyze student data on regularly administered performance tasks. I will continue to incorporate instructional strategies that will align with the needs of my students based on their results. My next steps will include revising the reading and writing rubrics to make sure

  12. Exit Ticket • How can we support your professional growth in future PDUs? • Continue to offer professional development opportunities that are focused on increasing the rigor in the classroom. • 2 things that you took away from the PDU this year • Being intentional when analyzing student performance data • Creating more purposeful lessons based on the results of the data analysis • 1 piece of constructive criticism • Clearer expectations on exactly which standards to focus on for each grade level/course
