  9. Types of Laws Criminal Law ‘An act or omission which is harmful to individuals and society and is punishable through the courts.’ Aim – to protect society, deter people from breaking the law by punishing offenders. Example –Fine or Imprisonment

  10. Civil Law ‘Regulates and protects disputes between individuals and seeks to enforce rights where some harm is done or anticipates to be done to an individual or a company.’ Aim – to place the wronged person back to the position he or she was before the wrong accused. Example - compensation
