  2. Donna Karan • Donna Karan became well-known for her “essentials” line. Initially, offering seven easy pieces which could all be mixed and matched, and created a fully integrated wardrobe. She showed her first women’s clothing collection in 1985.

  6. Early Life • October 2, 1948 Donna Karan was born in Forest Hills, Queens, USA. • 1962 At age 14 she started selling clothing on Cedarhurst New York’s Central Avenue. • 1966 She graduated from Hewlett High School and then went to the Parsons School of Design for two years.

  7. Career • After living college, Donna Karan worked for Ann Klein, becoming head of the Ann Klein design-team. • In the late 1960’s Donna Karan began her career as an assistant designer with Anne Klein.. • In 1971 she was promoted to associate designer. • In 1974 after Ann Klein died, she and her former classmate and friend Louis Dell’Ollio, became head designer of the house. • In 1984 she left Ann Klein and started her own business “to design modern clothes for modern people”. • In 1985 she launched her first women’s clothing collection Donna Karan Label. • In 1988 Donna Karan, nicknamed the Queen of Seventh Avenue. Extended her women’s “Donna Karan New York” line, DKNY • In 1992 she launched DKNY for men • In 1993 she launched the “Signature” line for men

Later Career • In 1997 Donna Karan quit as CEO of the Company but she continues as chairwoman and designer in charge of the Donna Karan Line. • In November 2000 the LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton) completed the acquisition of both Gabriela Studio, and Donna Karan International Inc. • In August 2008 Donna Karan relaunched her discontinued fragrance lines from the 1990’s.

  11. Influences • The theory of visually inspired instincts that if she Needs a particular item of clothing, then every other woman needs it too, made her one of the top fashion designers in the world.
