  1. EUMETSAT‘s CM-SAF Validation processes Rainer Hollmann Science Coordinator Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) http://www.cmsaf.eu

  2. Content • EUMETSAT’s CM SAF • Overview of CM SAF’S generated ECV’s • Validation procedures • Assessments • GCOS Guidelines for CDR preparation

  3. Targeted User Communities • Global and regional climate trends and variability analysis • high quality Climate Data Records (CDR) are expected e.g. for climate studies in contribution to IPCC. • Thematic Climate Data Records (TCDR) from CM SAF will provide consistent information on Essential Climate Variables (ECV)related to the global energy and water cycle supporting closure studies • Support to global and regional climate modelling • use of Climate Data Records for model evaluations, feedback studies, and uncertainty studies • these datasets needed at high(er) temporal and spatial resolutions • most recent satellite instrument, onlycover short time periods. • Operational climate monitoring and infrastructure planning • long term Climate Data Records(of ECVs)ANDnear real time operational products required • Consistent climate datasets and according near real time operational products needed (identical algorithm and auxilliary data)

  4. CM SAF CDR Product portfolio

  5. CM SAF CDR Product portfolio

  6. Content • EUMETSAT’s CM SAF • Overview of CM SAF’S generated ECV’s • Validation procedures • Assessments • GCOS Guidelines for CDR preparation

  7. Data flow example for SEVIRI CDR Validation • System architecture modular designed • System allows for re-processing • Validation is part of the processing subsystems

  8. Independent external Review process (I) • Requirements Review • Definition of product requirements (e.g. resol.) depending on application area • Definition of input data • Definition of validation methods • Validation is an integral part of the product characteristic

  9. Independent external Review process (II) • Dataset Readiness Review • Validation report is reviewed • Peer reviewed paper on data set • The achieved validation results lead then to committed service for CM SAF

  10. Operational review • Annual review of products to ensure quality per product • evaluate with product specific metric • Defined service specifications • Automatic validation performed • Report synthesized and published on website

  11. Validation procedures • CM SAF provides CDR’s from Satellite data not merged with In-Situ data to be able to use in-situ data as independent reference source • Implementation of an operationalized validation of products in order to sustained established procedures and methods (‘validation facility’) • An initial analysis of consistency, stability, homogeneity between satellite instruments is performed in CM SAF Example for the stability of surface albedo over Sahara.

  12. Validation depends on product • For CDR’s usually a two-fold process is applied • Automatic technical validation during processing (e.g. outliers, undefined, retrieval not successful) • Scientific validation and evaluation • a) vs. reference observations • a) vs available independent satellite data sets

  13. Scientific validation and evaluation • Traceability to SI standards where possible/appropriate • Different methods are used • Matchup-data base with reference sites Collocated sat. data

  14. Content • EUMETSAT’s CM SAF • Overview of CM SAF’S generated ECV’s • Validation procedures • Assessments • GCOS Guidelines for CDR preparation

  15. Assessments and retrieval intercomparison • Multiple CDR’s are available • There is a need to regularly quantify the current state of the art in products being constructed for climate applications • GEWEX Radiation Flux Assessment • GEWEX Cloud Assessment • CM SAF is supporting / co-leading the GEWEX Water vapour assessment • Cloud Retrieval Evaluation

  16. Content • EUMETSAT’s CM SAF • Overview of CM SAF’S generated ECV’s • Validation procedures • Assessments • GCOS Guidelines for CDR preparation

  17. Compliance with GCOS guidelines (I)

  18. Compliance with GCOS guidelines (II)

  19. Application of Maturity Index (prelim.) Note: terminology interpreted as of CM SAF
