Purpose • This course was designed to: • Help you understand how to handle a conflict • Help you understand the different roles you can play in a conflict • Demonstrate how the role you play can affect the outcome of the conflict

C O N F L I C T What is conflict? What does conflict mean to you? What does it feel like to be in a conflict? What situations feel like a conflict to you?
Examples of conflict • Being troubled over something • Being misunderstood • Feeling pressured to do something you don’t really want to do • Spreading rumors • Arguing with parents • Yelling at others • Being harassed • Getting picked on • Fighting with other students
Georgia State Law • 16-5-20 Simple Assault • A person commits an act which places another person in reasonable apprehension (fear) of immediately receiving a violent injury. • 16-5-23.1 Battery • A person commits the offense of battery when he or she intentionally causes substantial physical harm or visible bodily harm to another.

Statistics • The rate of homicides in U.S. schools has declined substantially since the early 1990s. CONFLICTis a disagreement or feelings of uneasiness. A conflict can be internal or involve others.
Negative ways of handling a conflict with someone • Yelling, screaming • Bickering, mumbling • Name calling • Talking behind someone’s back • Arguing in a mean way • Fighting
Positive ways to handle a conflict • Talk about the problem in a peaceful manner • Rationalize • Negotiate / Compromise • Put yourself in the other person’s shoes, look at the conflict from their perspective • Look at your options • Plus • Minus
Everyone has conflicts! • Conflict is a normal part of our life, and sometime it is a necessary part. Conflict allows us to grow and learn. People may not get what they want in a conflict situation, but people can disagree without fighting. It is important for us to be able to handle conflict in a way that preserves our personal safety.
Trouble in the Hall • What is the conflict in “Trouble in the Hall”? • How might Calvin’s thinking affect the conflict? • What would happen if Calvin were thinking… Jim was trying to move in on his girlfriend? That moving in on his girlfriend is a sign of disrespect to him? That Jim was just talking to Naomi and not making a move? That Naomi can talk to anybody she likes?
Roles in conflicts • People play different roles in conflicts, especially conflicts that become fights. • Conflicts that escalate into fights usually involve AGGRESSORS, VICTIMS, and BYSTANDERS.
Aggressor • Someone who provokes others, or starts fights. They believe violence is the only alternative. They act with impulsiveness, and hostility.
Victim • Person who is physically or verbally attacked. They are sometimes routinely bothered and picked on.
Bystander • Someone who is nearby during a conflict. This person can play an important part (pivotal role) in a conflict. What they do or say can lead to or prevent a conflict from turning into a fight.
There is an additional role that a person can be in a conflict. This role is called the …. Nonviolent problem-solver
Nonviolent problem-solver • Someone who approaches a problem in a positive, non violent way. This person can work things out without fighting.

Everyone has conflicts! • People are not good or bad because they experience conflict. • The important issue is how we handle conflict. • If we resolve our conflicts by fighting, then conflict becomes something negative. • If we handle it in a positive way, then conflict can help us learn more about others and ourselves.
