Understanding Core Beliefs of Christianity: The Nature of God and Salvation

Christianity centers on the belief in one God, represented in the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This divine Trinity, although a profound mystery, emphasizes the oneness of God. God, who created the world good, allows free will, leading to human sin and the need for redemption. Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, is both human and divine. Through His crucifixion and resurrection, He offers salvation. The Holy Spirit guides the Church, and faith, grace, and baptism are essential for eternal life. Differences in interpretations exist among Christian denominations.

  4. God is a Trinity (‘tri-unity’), one being of three co-equal persons: the Father (the Creator), the Son (the Redeemer) and the Holy Spirit (the Sanctifier). Ultimately the Trinity is a mystery beyond human comprehension.

  15. Through his death and resurrection Jesus conquered sin and death and won salvation by reconciling humanity with God.

  16. Salvation (or justification) begins with faith in Christ, the gift of God’s grace and its sign is baptism.

  17. There is no ready answer to why God, who is total goodness, allows evil and suffering to exist.

  18. The suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus shows that followers of Jesus can find meaning in their response to evil and suffering.

  19. The Holy Spirit directs the Church, the assembly of Christian believers. The main task of the Church is to preach the gospel.

  20. God’s grace leads people to faith and responsibility for their actions.

  21. Human destiny is eternal life with God in heaven.

  22. Hell or exclusion from God’s presence is the consequence of a life of evil.

  23. At the end of time Christ will come again and in final judgment and the Reign (or Kingdom) of God will exist in all its fullness. Michelangelo “The Last Judgement”.

  24. Christians generally agree on the principal beliefs outlined. However, across the variants of Christianity there are differences in understandings on some matters, e.g. how living the life of faith is related to one’s salvation, the meaning of the Eucharist, and the place of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
