Some of The Parties • There were two main parties in the elections of 2007. • The Democratic Alliance(DA) and the African National Congress(ANC). • DA’s include independence of the judiciary and encourage to put people before the political parties. • The ANC tried to get rid of apartheid. But ANC got banned by the white South African Govt. in 1960-1990. • They still practices outside and “underground” of South Africa • Finally when the UN decided to ban all trade with South Africa until the made Apartheid illegal. • More information later on the parties.
Apartheid • Apartheid comes from the word apart. • Bantu is another word for a black African. • Apartheid was passed by laws in the 1950’s • In 1994 the constitution in South Africa was rewritten and the first black president was soon elected.
Other Facts • Since the end of Apartheid there has been a total of three elections. • Since Africa has been equal, there has been a change in the schools. • There are over 12 million people who are learning in school and over 86,000 teachers. • There are over 26,000 schools and a little more than 1000 of them are • Public Ratio of teachers to students is about 37:1 • Private schools is about 18:1
Democratic Alliance • The Objective of the DA is to let citizens take control of there lives and let them choose where they do in life. • Expand not Limit choice. • There are Five key point, they basically reflect the US constitution.
What The 5 Points • A constitution that enshrines the rule of law, individual rights and freedoms, and the separation of powers • Transparency and accountability, without which governments abuse their power and compromise the freedoms enshrined in the constitution. • Security of person and property • An independent and free-thinking civil society, including a free and independent media and a free and independent political opposition that is loyal to the constitutional order • A general tolerance of difference on the part of the population. African National Congress • After the ANC came back, as you know, it made apartheid was illegal. • This allowed blacks and colored's to be able to vote next to each other. • “In 1995 when the ANC called for the people to make townships ungovernable, the government declared a State of Emergency, detaining over 300,000 people without trial and violence became the definable characteristic of the time with thousands losing their lives.”(essortment.com) • Nelson Mandela, who you learned about on Tuesday, was elected president four years later when they had over 63% of the majority vote.
