  2. Racism • “Negative behaviour based on an incorrect assumption that one race is inherently superior to another”

  3. Racism • American Anthropological Association states that: • Idea of race comes from history & culture, not science • Race is a learned concept, part of our cultural behaviour

  4. Key Definitions Stereotype False or generalized beliefs about a group of people that result in categorizing members without regard for individual difference Eg: - East Asians are good at Math - Caucasians can’t dance well

  5. Key Definitions Prejudice Set of opinions, attitudes, and feelings that unfairly cast a group and its members in a negative light, without legitimate reasons Eg: - Young Black males are all criminals

  6. Self-fulfilling Prejudice? Certain behaviours are expected (i.e. girls are not good at Math) Expectations met and reinforced (i.e. girls have problems in math) Unequal treatment is given (i.e. teacher ignores girls’ questions) Group accepts situation (i.e. girls stop asking questions)

  7. Key Definitions Discrimination Inequitable treatment of people based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, or other factor Eg: - Hiring only South Asians - Choosing only female Kindergarten teachers

  8. Key Definitions Systemic Discrimination Policies and practices in an organization that result in the inequitable treatment of members of certain groups Eg: - Canada’s “Head Tax” for Chinese immigrants

  9. Key Definitions Genocide Organized, systematic destruction of an identifiable group by those with power in society Eg: - The Holocaust - Rwanda

  10. Theories of Hatred • Socialization Theory • Prejudice transmitted through socialization • Agents of socialization are key • Prejudice may become difficult to change when individual becomes an adult

  11. Theories of Hatred • Structural Theories • Society is divided between those who have power and those who don’t • Those with power use prejudices / discrimination to retain power • Creates feelings of inferiority by lack of acceptance of diversity

  12. The “White Privilege Knapsack” (Peggy McIntosh, 1988) - Can shop without harassment - Widely represented in media images - Shown to have “made” my country what it is - Not asked to speak on behalf of all people of my racial group

  13. Theories of Hatred • Social-Psychological Theories • Events in society produce psychological arousal in people and can produce prejudices (i.e. 9/11) • Scapegoating is a common effect of difficult times / situations
