  2. General Information • School day: 8:55-3:20pm • Fridays: 8:55-12:30pm • P.E. with Mr Papa   on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays – full P.E. kit required

  4. Literacy • Reading, writing, listening and talking skills are taught through: • - novel studies • - topic research tasks • - group, peer and independently • These are differentiated accordingly and further enhanced through IDL topic work, and more widely in and out of the school context.

  5. What will Spelling look like? • We follow our school progressive spelling policy. • On a Monday the teacher will introduce the sound for the week. The children will have a differentiated spelling list but they will all learn the same spelling pattern. • On a Tuesday, Wednesday &Thursday they will have the opportunity to practise the spelling pattern using multi- sensory teaching strategies. • In addition to these, we also practise common words and revise any incorrect words from our jotters.

Numeracy and Maths • Skills progression based on the Curriculum for Excellence Benchmarks and Stockbridge Counts to develop mental agility (pre-assessed starting point, clear next steps)  • Pupils develop their conceptual understanding and practise the skills • For example: Column method (standard algorithm) is taught only after a solid understanding of the concepts of place value and addition • A mixture of teaching approaches: written tasks, using ICT (e.g. Sumdog to reinforce concepts), real life problems in various contexts, working independently and with peers

Conceptual understanding • Using concrete materials teaching different strategies in various contexts • Place value concept: zero holding place. partitioning  • Regrouping:  exchanging 10 ones = 1 ten, 100 tens = 1000, 10 hundreds= 1000 • Near doubles • Empty number line (skip counting, jump strategy) • Compensation and rounding • Number bonds knowledge (0.3 How much more to make 1.0 ?) • Common misconceptions, e.g. 0.3 •                                             + 0.7 •                                               _____ •                                               0.10 • BEFORE teaching standard algorithm (column addition)

Reporting • We hold Parent Consultations twice a year and use Online Learning Journals to report to you on your child’s progress. • We also use OLLJs to share learning activities undertaken in class. • There will be a minimum number of comments per term which will be set out in our Reporting Policy

  12. Home School Learning in P5-7 • A home learning wall will be sent home each term. • Spelling pattern and word lists will be provided and published on the school website. Spelling tasks will be included in the home learning wall. • All children will have a chance to complete a long term project linked to a topic in class once or twice a year. They will be given a deadline for completion and the sharing of this learning. • By the end of each term, aim to complete at least one box from each coloured section. • Home learning journals should be brought into school on a MONDAY.

Additional information • Parent helpers for trips – liaise with class reps • Parent ‘experts’  • Parent Pay (no cash) • Mobile Phones – must be turned off before the bell goes and kept in bag till the end of the day • Medication – please keep us up to date (cough sweets with a note) • In-service days: 21st and 22nd of October 7th and 8th January 4th May                              8th May (Holiday)
