  1. LC Tracking Group: General Introduction Bruce Schumm UC Santa Cruz Arlington LC Workshop Jan 9-11 2003

  2. Since Santa Cruz A number of new groups have entered the scene 11 proposals to NSF/DOE (1 via ADR program) Three 90-minute phone meetings • Focus on simulation (11/6/02) • Focus on gaseous tracking (11/26/02) • Focus on solid-state tracking (12/12/02) (Slides at http://scipp.ucsc.edu/~schumm/lctrack) Poised to ramp up effort when funding becomes available

  3. What About the Money? (Volunteer more information if you have it) DOE: Awaiting final budget; then will contact people about supplemental proposals (when?) Expects to fund full $500k for detector R&D NSF: I have no further information Presumably, we’ll here about this in the workshop plenaries

  4. Where are We Headed? Many new groups have expressed interest in the past year; activity increasing on pre-existing issues, some new technologies are now under consideration Nominal scope of proposals to UCLC/LCRD is three years  By end of 2005, we should be concluding basic R&D and beginning to assess options. Detector Design Manual ??

  5. Baseline `Large’ Detector

  6. Baseline `Silicon’ Detector

  7. Where are the Holes? Need to keep this question in mind… • Simulation and pattern recognition • Forward tracking requirements and technology • Tracking/calorimetry interface • ??? Have tried to address as much as possible with new R&D efforts (as well as new approached); as always, there is room for new groups, especially those open to tackling persistent questions

  8. Near Term Organization Regional Meetings: Winter 2003 Arlington, Texas Summer 2003 Ithaca, New York (Winter 2004 West Coast) International Meeting: Winter 2004 Europe Interim Organization: Three focused phone meetings were helpful (format?) Regularly-scheduled software/simulation meetings?

  9. Near-term Organization II Things should accelerate soon as new money lubricates the R&D effort For now, stay with ad-hoc phone meetings for hardware groups Set up regular simulation/software phone meetings  1-2 topics per meeting, detailed presentation, relaxed discussion (working meetings) Contact between hardware and software groups?

  10. Tracking Group Priorities List of priorities from Spring, 2002: http://scipp.ucsc.edu/~schumm/nlc/sc_062802.ps Needs updating since new groups have entered the picture, and in view of recent developments both regionally and internationally. We should address issues of organization and priorities throughout these sessions, as well as in the closing discussion of tracking session IV.
