Leadership Development • Definition: Christian leadership development is the dynamic process of teaching God’s revealed will to influence character and ability for productive service before God. • Social Science definition: the process of influence • Five areas of development • Knowledge • Character • Ability • Relationship with God and people • Experience

Leadership Development • Work of leaders • Reconciling people – ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18-20) • Equipping of the church – by equipping of "God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." (Eph. 4:12) • Encouraging leadership – teaching given to faithful men (2 Tim. 2:2)

  4. Leadership Development • Three metaphors that define leadership in scripture • Servants - submit themselves to the lordship of Christ. • Stewards - entrusted with message of the gospel. • Shepherds - care for the flock.

Leadership Development • Types of leaders • Type A - servants within local churches without higher education; lay leaders. • Type B - ministers such as elders and deacons with broader influence than type A. • Type C - full-time ministers in the local congregation, bi-vocational in the third world countries. • Type D - leaders with regional influence • Type E - leaders who work at national or international influence.

  6. Leadership Development • Modes of leadership training • Formal training - organized training in a school setting. • Non-formal - teaching through a designed program but not in a school setting. • Informal - using everyday activities and experience for training.

Leadership Development • Guidelines for effective leadership training • Training needs to be appropriate for their ministries, gifts, and time schedule. • Training needs to incorporate various modes of training. • The modes and methods of training should vary depending on the maturity of the Christian movement. • The phasing-out of missionaries should be planned in conjunction with the training of leaders.

Leadership Development • Develpomental congregational leadership stages (Trull) • Emerging Leaders – young in faith and surfacing as potential leaders • Developing Leaders – people involved in basic leadership roles before any formal recognition • Recognized Leaders – people selected as congregational leaders • Experienced Leaders – recognized as leaders and effectively performing responsibilities in leadership roles • Mature Leaders – recognized, experienced leaders who are encouraging, developing and preparing others for leadership
