  3. Diet in ALSPAC The assessment of diet has been an integral part of ALSPAC from the beginning

  4. Dietary methodology • Food frequency questionnaires • Mother, father & child • Age at introduction of foods and drinks • Eating habits & attitudes to food • Mother & child • Food record • Child

  5. Food frequency questionnaire • Asked about food eaten nowadays • Gave a list of 43 - 54 foods to tick • meat – 5-8 separate questions • fish – 3-5 separate questions • vegetables - 7 separate questions • fruit - 3 separate questions • breakfast cereals - 3 separate questions • and so on

  7. Foods eaten every day • Asked about types of some foods • Bread – e.g white, wholemeal etc • Milk – e.g. full fat, semi-skimmed • Spreading fats – e.g. butter, flora • Asked about amounts of some foods • number of slices of bread • number of cups of tea and coffee

  8. Uses of FFQ data • Dietary Patterns • Uses FFQ answers directly • Kate Northstone has done a lot of work on these • Calculation of nutrient intakes • List of appropriate foods • Appropriate portions sizes • Appropriate nutrient data • Very much an estimate

  9. FFQs with nutrient data • Mothers • 32 weeks pregnancy, 4 years later • Partners • Partial during the pregnancy, 4 years later • Children • 3 years, 4 years, 7 years and 9 years

  10. Food Records • 3-day unweighed food record • sent in advance with instructions • When possible checked with carer/child at clinic • coded using British food tables • all records checked, outliers rechecked

  11. Food records collected Parental completion • 10% random sub-sample (CIF) • 4 months (1 day only) - 933 infants • 8 months - 1178 infants • 18 months -1026 children • 3.5 years - 863 children • 5 years – 750 children • Whole cohort (including CIF) • 7 years – 7230

  12. Food records used at age 10 & 13 years • 3-days records • Completed by child • Parental help • Clinic interview • Over 6000 each time • Nutrients & food groups calculated
