Lung Transplantation Complications: Pneumocystis Pneumonia and Histopathological Findings

DESCRIPTION

This case study discusses a patient who underwent lung transplantation 1 year ago and developed bilateral Pneumocystis pneumonia. The histological examination reveals widening of the alveolar septa associated with an infiltrate of mononuclear cells and foamy, honeycombed acellular exudates in the alveolar spaces. Notably, the exudate contains aggregated cysts and trophozoites of Pneumocystis jirovecii, which remain undetected on Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining. This condition highlights the importance of monitoring for opportunistic infections post-transplant.
