  3. Prescribed Burning at Saint John’s Equipment A fire resistant shirt and hardhat will be provided and MUST be worn at all times. The shirt is the outer layer and the sleeves must be down. Wear boots or heaviest leather shoes you have. Wear long, cotton jeans. Bring cotton or leather gloves if you have them. Please do not wear polyester, down, or fleece. They burn or melt! Wool is safe.

  4. Prescribed Burning at Saint John’s Equipment Use tools safely. Shovels. Water backpacks. Fire rakes and Swatters. Pulaskis. Torches.

  5. Prescribed Burning at Saint John’s • Communication Know your leader. Stay with your group. Do not work alone. Make sure your leader has communications.

  6. Prescribed Burning at Saint John’s Tactics Assure line is prepared. Check weather. Assure crews are ready. Ignite narrow strip to expand line. Hold it. Ignite another strip to expand line. Hold it. Repeat above.

  7. Prescribed Burning at Saint John’s Safety Stay in communication. Know your escape route. Know your safety zone. Do not get complacent. Do not goof around. Pay attention to the fire.
