  6. Update on two initiatives we introduced last year. • International Recruiting • Distance Learning

  7. We had two specific targets for international recruiting. • Identify demand for new international Ph.D. students by department • Supply and demand planning • Help the Ambassadors program • Recruit new students • Countries that provide full funding

  8. Demand for new Ph.D. students • Started with programs that graduate the most international Ph.D. students and most per TT • Sent an informal questionnaire • Capacity • # they would fully fund if students were the very best • # they would admit if funded by their government but GRE and/or TOEFL were below “normal” • Assumed that they were screened within their home country • Data aggregated and we’re working with the departments who expressed interest • Trying to operate within their targets and constraints

  9. Recruiting new fully funded students • Mexico • Conacyt funding for both “traditional” students and existing faculty members • Hopefully an agreement will be signed by mid-November • Opportunity for Clemson students to get a Master’s degree in Mexico • Thailand • I would like your help to identify all former Clemson students in Thailand • If you want these kids, it takes a lot of “hand holding” • Saudi Arabia and Libya • Sean is leading this effort through ELS • IE is testing some other options (by accident) • One Kaddafi scholar, one Saudi funded by his university and one Saudi military officer

  10. Our test case with one type of distance education is under way. • Focus on working professionals in the capital projects business • Required a new degree • Asynchronous delivery • Echo 360 course capture software and “studio” in place and functional (most of the time) • Special topics course being delivered this semester with reasonably good results and feedback from students

  11. If your department is interested, I know some of the key activities required for execution. • New programs are a pain in the rear end but are necessary in some cases • Takes about a year if everything goes smoothly • For us, partnering was critical • With an industry group • With colleagues in Civil and Management • With colleagues at VPI&SU and U of Newcastle • The hardware and software are not very expensive but still a bit flakey • CCIT support is still not what I personally would like • “Managing” the program takes time

  12. If you are not engaged in any of the things I’m doing and would like to be, just let me know. • Programs that graduate a number of international Ph.D. students and want to play • Can fully fund excellent students (~$20K) • Have capacity and willingness to admit fully funded Ph.D. students who were vetted within their country but have low GRE and/or TOEFL • Want to know more about our distance education program

  13. Initiatives UpdateJames Witte Clemson University Fall 2008

  14. Initiatives begun this fall • Graduate student recruitment fair in SecondLife. • Coordinate and expand graduate education efforts in Greenville.

  15. What is SecondLife? July 2007

  16. 1) Why a Graduate student recruitment fair in SecondLife? • Explore new ways to get graduate school information to prospective students. • Contribute to the Graduate School’s reputation for creativity and innovation. • Develop a stronger Graduate School presence in SecondLife. • Ultimately consider how virtual worlds and other immersive learning environments can contribute to graduate education more broadly.

  17. 2) Coordinate and expand graduate education efforts in Greenville Currently graduate education takes place at a variety of locations: the Renaissance Center (and perhaps another BBS facility in Greenville) CU-ICAR and the University Center of Greenville (UCG). Initial focus on UCG, which Dr. Fred Baus, UCG President/CEO envisions as “… an education mall with USC-Upstate as the undergraduate anchor and Clemson as the graduate anchor.” July 2007

  18. Current Graduate Programs at UCG

  19. What happens at UCG will only be part of the graduate education and research activities in Greenville as there will be “signature” activities that take place downtown, at GHS or at ICAR. • But UCG can provide an appropriate space for a variety of “backroom operations” that don’t require “premium space” that may be limited and/or expensive.

  20. Three programs have the largest presence at the UCG (nursing, education and business).  As these programs have a “distance education” feel to them, UCG may also be the logical organizational and physical home for the activities related to immersive learning environments. • There are a variety of human subjects related projects in all collegesthat could make use of office and observation space at UCG and work with human subjects that are “more real” than the typical undergraduate research subject.  • CCIT currently assessing IT issues at UCG and how to correct these.

  21. Relationship of these initiatives to broader Graduate School goals • Graduate student recruitment fair in SecondLife • Efforts to establish Clemson as the world leader in research on and use of virtual worlds and immersive learning environments at the graduate level • Coordinate and expand graduate education efforts in Greenville • Efforts to expand the market for high quality graduate education beyond a single geographic location.

  22. Graduate program participation in initiatives • Graduate student recruitment fair in SecondLife. • Need to know if your program would like to participate (room for several more). • Coordinate and expand graduate education efforts in Greenville. • What opportunities do you see for your program in Greenville, especially at the UCG.
