    1. Ladies & Gentlemen, It’s a great pleasure to be here this afternoon – even if it is the graveyard shift! I guess there are two groups of people here, those recovering from last night and those of you who are already starting to think about those planes you need to catch, but please spare a thought for the future of your industry, unless we manage to persuade Line managers of the responsibility we have to train and equip a new generation of technically competent individuals, we may all find ourselves part of a rapidly diminishing business, we heard all of yesterday about how training budgets were being slashed. Well trained, enthusiastic young people are as essential to today’s world as we were when we were young(er), and they are potentially an endangered species. Do I say this to shock you – perhaps!, but my concern stems more from having been a Line manager, a Petroleum Engineer even, and seeing what needs to be done to prepare a new and hugely diverse generation. Believe me Ladies & Gentlemen, the world does not look particularly like this room! Blended learning sounds like a pretty dry topic and I think there are people in the room who know far more than me anyway, so allow me to digress a little, but I will show what we in Shell are doing about putting Blended Learning to Work, and perhaps show why it is essential to create a mindset which demonstrates that Learning is an investment and not a cost to the business. Thank you for asking me to share with you the Shell Story of how we are meeting our business needs, today and in the future, by Putting Blended Learning to Work.Ladies & Gentlemen, It’s a great pleasure to be here this afternoon – even if it is the graveyard shift! 2. Traditional (Formal) Learning was around Classroom learning, We are here today because e learning has become a big innovation trend. We hear today that many companies now recognise that e learning is not enough but “real companies” think blended learning,- in which e learning plays an important part, will be crucial. In Shell we have moved beyond blended learning to the nexy stage in our journey towards the Learning organisation. A recent survey in Shell found that most learning taking place in Shell is “informal”. Mentoring and Coaching are the single most important factor in the success of our most succesful senior staff be they technical or leaders. Global Networks are ubiquitous to most successful companies, interactions between peer groups are crucial. We are learning now, but how will this learning be carried back to your company, will it be transferred effectively and will it affect your business results next year. 3. The solution lies in . . . . . an integrated form of learning through workbased activities. Traditional Classroom activities will always have their place in delivering quality learning. In some cases the experience gained through being in a face-to-face environment sparks learning that lasts a lifetime. Let me tell you a story of our (EP00-Belgium). So traditional classroom activities are here to stay. What we want to do is capture that face-to-face experience and create similar experiences in the virtual network learning world. Because most of us want to learn in a social environment we have moved away from e-learning to a blended approach that combines the best of the best from both spheres. We have taken the tools and processes typically thought of as informalised learning – coaching and mentoring, Knowledge Management through Global Networks, Sharing of best practices, Expert Networks and peer interactions, both face-to-face and virtually and blended them into a workplace learning model. Encouraging tapping into global knowledge networks in order to connect with Subject Matter Experts all over the world, learners build relationships that would have been impossible to make before. They learn to use those experts in activities and conversations where together they solve real world problems.. Isn’t this normal you ask, sure! So why doesn’t it happen? Learning environment! Best Practice sharing is critical to our business. Through workbased activities, learners work with peers from their own teams, colleagues in the global networks and experts to leverage experience to solve complex technology issues. They learn how to coach each other through these peer interactions and virtual syndicates. WORKBASED ACTIVITY incorporates the best both worlds.
