How to refine the rim of your pinch pot. You will need to gather up: Tools: Surform carver, fettling knife, slip and brush, Kingspin wheel, puffy elephant ear sponge, rubber tipped modeling tool, rubber finishing rib, ruler/paddle, and a bit of water in a bowl. Your completed pinch pot with foot with plastic inside for support. 2. Pinch the width of the rim lightly to make it even. 3. Bowl should be a little stiff/dry at this point. 4. Design the look of the rim. Will you : cut it even/level, make it undulating, make it asymmetrical ? Not sure? Do some research in the classroom library bookshelves or on line. 5. Using a Surform carver or fettling knife, cut the rim a little bit at a time. To determine if the rim is level, place the bowl at eye level on a Kingspin wheel and while squinting, look across both rims. Turn the wheel slowly to look around all sides. Make adjustments if needed. 6. Dip an elephant ear sponge into water and squeeze the water out really well. Swipe the sponge over the rim. 7. Using the rubber tipped modeling tool, gently smooth over the groggy areas. If desired. Make any adjustments you feel will improve the creativity and craftsmanship of the pot. You can re-wet the bowl to shape it asymmetrically. Using water on your fingers in a small spot at a time, rub the water into the bowl to stretch or shape it. Critique with a classmate/teacher to determine if you are finished.
