  1. What car’s best for my family? • Your family of four needs a car and you get to help decide which car they should buy! They know they want to buy something that is 2007 or newer. They have asked you to do some research and find what you think is the best car based on your budget. Is it better to buy new or used? Hybrid or pure gas powered? A large SUV or a compact car? It’s up to you to convince them of your choice!

  2. Your Task • Over the next four class periods you will be working on your project in a three member team. You must find the best car for your family of four that drives 2000 miles a month on the highway and back it up with some information! You will need a good argument to convince your parents. Use the questions in the process section to help guide you.

  3. Process • BUDGET: You can afford up to $500 a month on the car payment and gas. Any money you do not spend towards the car you can use for recreation! You may only get up to a 72 month car loan. Use the following rates: 24 month loan = 0.9% 36 month loan = 1.9% 48 month loan = 2.9% 60 month loan = 3.9% 72 month loan = 4.9%

  4. Process Continued • Go online and look at some cars that you are interested in. Create a list of car prices with their highway gas mileages so you can check to see how much your monthly payments will be on the bank site and how much you will be spending on gas each month. Are there cars that are really good but don’t cost as much? If I like a car, would I save money if I found it used? • Go to the bank site and check to see how much the monthly payments will be on the car. Do I want to save money on the cheaper car or do I really want the more expensive one?

  5. Process Continued • How much will the car cost each month if you add the cost of fuel each month to the cost of the payment each month? • Will I feel safe in the car? Would I trust it’s crash test scores? • How much will we save each month if we buy a more inexpensive car? What could we do each month with the money we saved of the $500 per month? Family of 4 Examples: Movies - $30 per trip Dine out - $60 per meal McDonalds - $20 per meal

Conclusion Throughout this Webquest you have learned: • There are many costs to owning a car. • The cost of fuel can vary from car to car. • People have to buy cars within their means. • There is a plethora of internet sites that help you decide which car is best to buy! • Loan payments can vary a lot depending on how long you take to pay back them back.

  12. Conclusion Continued • You should have learned by now that people can’t always buy a fancy car that they really want but there are a lot of cars out there to choose from that are affordable! Families have to make choices that involve money all the time and a car is one of the most important ones because owning one is so expensive! Remember, we did not include insurance or maintenance costs for your car so it would be even more expensive in the end!
